The primary function of the Research Scientist is to provide technical expertise and experience to plan, design, coordinate, supervise, and carry out research projects in the laboratory of Dr.
Alejandro Aballay in the Department of Genetics. The Aballay laboratory studies the role of the nervous system in the control of inflammatory and stress pathways at the organismal level.
The ideal candidate will have a proficient skill set in RNA biology, molecular and cellular biology, biochemistry, microscopy, and data analysis.
Because deficient or excessive inflammation can lead to infection, cancer, or conditions such as Crohn’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and Alzheimer’s disease, the research conducted in the Aballay laboratory impacts the overall research efforts throughout the institution.
Key Functions
Research Activities
- Plans, designs, organizes, coordinates, directs and participates in scientific research projects.
- Collects, analyzes, and evaluates research data using appropriate software applications. Interprets data with knowledge and experience for hypothesis and model suggestion.
- Troubleshoots experiments, improves research methods and revises approaches to advance lab projects.
- Follows lab protocols and maintains accurate and detailed records of experimental data and procedures.
- Learns, develops and establishes new techniques and / or new approaches that are required for lab research.
- Learns, develops and establishes bioinformatics analyses to enhance research efforts.
- Compiles, writes and submits reports to Principal Investigator. Contributes to the writing of publications and grant applications.
- Presents at scientific meetings and conferences.
- Shows an ability to work under pressure and deal with changing priorities to meet timelines.
Laboratory Management, Organization and Collaboration
- Maintains work flows and ensures the quality and integrity of experimental procedures and data of the laboratory.
- Supervises the use of laboratory equipment and implements safety procedures.
- Plans and conducts the training of staff, students and postdoctoral fellows for the research knowledge and techniques of the lab.
- Communicates and collaborates with staff and investigators on research projects inside and outside of MD Anderson.
- Maintains good working relationships with co-workers and other researchers. Collaborative attitude and ability to work in a team-based environment is crucial for this position.

EDUCATION
Required : Master's degree in one of the natural sciences or related field.
Preferred : Medical degree or PhD in one of the natural sciences or related field.
EXPERIENCE
Required : Four years of experience in experimental or scientific work. With PhD, no experience required. With Medical degree, two years of experience in experimental or scientific work.
