Michigan Audubon is seeking an accomplished and motivated research scientist to lead research endeavors for the organization.

This includes seeking opportunities for research efforts on any of our 20 sanctuaries / properties (over 4,000 acres statewide) with prominent research collaborators such as universities, colleges, conservation organizations, government agencies, and / or NGOs.

A key element of this role is overseeing research and community engagement at our Whitefish Point Bird Observatory while managing a team of seasonal avian researchers (Piping Plover monitoring, raptor and waterbird counting, and owl banding).

It is essential for this person to have extensive bird banding experience to join the organization’s Master Station Permit.

This role includes both time in the field and in the office.

Responsibilities

  • Seek opportunities for research to take place on our sanctuaries and for the results to be published.
  • Oversee research projects, whether led internally or in support of collaborative partners. Seek grant funding to support efforts, developing and submitting contract / grant proposals.

Ensure project results meet project goals, timelines, and budget.

Oversee Whitefish Point Bird Observatory as a research and engagement center. Ensure research protocols are meeting best practices and are followed.

Work with internal team on outreach efforts / events to grow membership and donation support. Develop plans for maintenance of physical structures and ensure efforts are completed.

Engage with local partners to build relationships and collaborations.

  • Recruit, supervise, develop, and direct research staff.
  • Analyze data, write reports, publish data, and present findings to key stakeholders.
  • Work with internal team to connect research to conservation plans and bird-specific programs.
  • Represent organization on esteemed avian-related committees.
  • Enhance efforts and outcomes of community science avian research.

Qualifications

Ability to join the organization’s Master Station Permit for bird banding with the U.S. Geological Survey as the designated individual responsible for operations occurring under the permit.

Must meet permit requirements (which includes previous banding and marking experience) or hold a current master banding permit.

  • Graduate degree in relevant field to the position (wildlife, environmental studies, botany) with thesis experience (PhD preferred).
  • 4-6 years of post-graduate experience that includes project and staff management.
  • Experience in staff recruitment, current hiring practices, managing, and developing a staff team.
  • Strong ability to lead projects, working both independently and on a team.
  • Ability to think creatively about new research questions.
  • Strong skills in team leadership, partnership development, relationship building, administration, and organization.
  • Experience developing budgets for large-scale projects and ensuring work is completed on time and within budget constraints.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both in person and in writing. Candidates may be expected to demonstrate their proficiency in these skills during the interview process.
  • Interest in helping Michigan Audubon meet its mission of connecting birds and people for the betterment of both and fulfilling its strategic goals regarding research.
  • Experience in the statistical analysis and presentation of data.
  • Experience with grant writing and being awarded grants.
  • Comfortable with a mix of travel, fieldwork, and office work.
  • Proficient in GIS programs, R or other statical analysis programs.
  • Physically able to work long hours, work outdoors in the elements, and perform efforts such as hikes and moving equipment.
