Job Description
The ATC is seeking a Staff Gas and Solid State Laser Research Scientist with experience in the development of gas phase and solid state lasers / amplifiers, optical systems and devices.
You should have experience in the design and modeling, characterization and optimization of gas phase and solid-state lasers / amplifiers, familiarity with current state-of-the-art in gas phase and solid state lasers / amplifiers, optical materials, and experience with the characterization and optimization of lasers and optical systems.
The successful candidate will have a strong background in the underlying physics, thermodynamics, and heat transfer domains typical of gas laser operation.
Additional knowledge of related laser-based technologies is desired, including directed energy, coherent and direct detection laser radar, radiometry, Fourier / wave optics, beam propagation, and / or atmospheric sciences.
Some of your responsibilities in this role will include the following :
- Laser Systems Engineering
- Conducting trade studies and making selections of laser and / or optical technologies
- Maintaining currency with scientific state-of-the-art to support innovation and design enhancements relevant to LM's focus laser technologies
- Gas laser physics design and modeling
- Design of other laser and optical systems and devices
- Evaluation of predicted performance through computational modeling and analysis
- Laboratory testing and experimental demonstration
- Prototype development
- System analysis and integration
- Field demonstration
- Contribution to summary reports, oral presentations, and / or technical proposals is expected.
We are looking for someone with excellent written / presentation / oral communication skills to communicate with diverse audiences.
This position is located at a special access facility. U.S. Citizenship is required and candidate must be willing and able to obtain a DoD security clearance.
Desired skills
- Advanced degree in Physics, Optics, Electrical Engineering, Applied Math, or related fields is strongly desired.
- Familiarity with optical design and analysis software tools. Examples include Zemax, FRED, GLAD, Code-V and LASCAD.
- Familiarity with laboratory development and modeling software tools (i.e. Matlab / Simulink, Labview, and Mathcad).
- Knowledge of laser weapons technologies including : radiometry, optical propagation and adaptive optics, beam control, and / or target effects.
- Expertise in aspects of : Laser Modeling Theory, custom modeling of laser gain dynamics, thermal effects resulting from these gain dynamics, loss mechanisms and efficiency drivers for gas lasers, diffraction analysis of laser resonators and optical beam trains, and various other optical processes.
- Field-related contacts / network.
- Ideally experienced with both product development and technology development organizations.
- Knowledge of DoD / DoE / FFRDC research & development ecosystem.
- Technical leadership of laser and / or NLO hardware transition to high TRL (for terrestrial, airborne, and / or space applications).
- Experience in federally or institutionally-funded project and program management techniques.
- Current TS / SCI clearance or equivalent qualifying investigation
