General Description
Please note this is a "continuous recruit position" to build an applicant pool for all elementary schools during the 2024-2025 academic year.

Ensures the safety, security, and welfare of students, faculty, staff and visitors in an assigned location. Work involves being highly visible in the halls, cafeteria, rest rooms, stairwells, grounds, parking lots, and other locations for the purpose of ensuring safety, order, and discipline;
and preventing crime and detaining persons violating the law on school premises. Requires excellent rapport with students to encourage proper behavior and cooperation with school administrators and law enforcement agencies in accordance with established policies, procedures, and regulations.
Selects and applies appropriate effective methods of crime prevention, intervention, and enforcement in different situations.
Responds to violent or other disruptive events.
Essential Job Functions
Assists school administrators in the prevention of personal injury, property loss, and disruption of the educational process through routine patrol, crime prevention techniques, surveillance, emergency response, recovery of property, etc.
Patrols assigned areas, buildings, grounds, and parking lots to prevent student disruptions, fire, theft, vandalism, and unauthorized / illegal entry and other activities that detract from a safe, secure, and orderly school environment.
Maintains a high level of visibility as students arrive and depart from school and as they change classes throughout the school day.
Enforces School Board policies and procedures regarding the conduct of persons on school property.
Assists principal and staff in stopping altercations, arguments, or other forms of disruptive or illegal behavior.
Assists school administrators in conducting investigations of student violations : , collecting witness or participant statements, reviewing surveillance footage, etc.
As directed, assists in student searches for illegal substances or weapons.
Ensures that parked vehicles are properly registered.
Ensures that individuals on school grounds have legitimate business with the school, and either escorts unauthorized persons off school property or waits with them for police assistance as needed.
Inspects the physical security of the building : to include checking doors, windows, gates, fences, locks, lights, heating, and fire equipment;
and reports any unusual conditions or maintenance problems to appropriate staff.
Works with school officials and staff to maintain and correct problems, promote safety, and promote pride and ownership of school facilities among students.
Patrols night functions, such as meetings, student activities, and athletic events as requested.
Renders first aid and CPR as appropriate.
Collaborates with and assists public safety (police, fire, EMT) personnel who respond to calls at school or on school grounds.
Offers testimony in court or before the School Board as needed.
Serves as a member of the School Safety Team and assists with emergency planning, training, and drills.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Report Preparation :
Prepares required written reports of incidents and disciplinary referrals, and maintains proper records.
Equipment Operation :
Operates personal computer, basic office equipment, metal detectors, Automated External Defibrillator (AED), camera surveillance systems, radio communications, and other security equipment.
Contacts :
Works closely with school administration, Safety & Security Department staff, School Resource Officers, students, faculty and staff, Chesterfield Police Department, and other public safety personnel.

Physical Demands :
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers; reach with arms; see a computer screen and printed material;
and speak and hear clearly in a variety of conditions. This is a moderately-to-highly physically active position, which may require the ability to stand, sit, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb stairs, reach overhead, and / or crawl for extended periods of time.
The employee must occasionally lift and / or move up to 100 pounds.
Work Environment :
The employee regularly works in a public school setting. Work involves potential for danger and physical injuries from trespassers, students or others with weapons, or persons committing acts which are violations of law, requiring sufficient training in restraint techniques to avoid personal harm and bodily injury.
The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, fumes and dust and may frequently work in outside weather conditions and around moving vehicles.
The noise level is moderate to high.
Qualifications
Considerable knowledge of safe and effective security procedures and methodologies. Working knowledge of the School Board and assigned school policies and regulations.
- Demonstrated ability to investigate, identify, and correct problems; to interpret and apply school regulations in a non-threatening and cooperative manner;
- and to handle sensitive issues and work under adverse conditions. Demonstrated ability to administer first aid procedures;
to work independently and assume responsibility for assigned work areas; and to communicate effectively with students, staff, parents and school officials.
Requirements
Must be 21 years of age or older, have a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent, and have documented work experience with a positive employment history.
Minimum of two years experience in security / law enforcement is required. Must be certified, or work towards certification once hired, in CPR / AED and First Aid, and maintain certification for duration of employment.
The employee must maintain appropriate physical standards including agility, physical strength, and stamina. Must successfully complete entry-level training to be certified as a School Security Officer within 60 days from the date of employment and complete in-service training as required by the State of Virginia and CCPS Safety & Security Manager.
