About the Department

The Cobey Laboratory in the Department of Ecology and Evolution at the University of Chicago studies how the host adaptive immune response coevolves with pathogens, especially in ways relevant to epidemiological and evolutionary forecasting, vaccine design, and pathogen diversity.

The work is computational, and we collaborate closely with immunologists and epidemiologists.

Job Summary

This position leads a research project or contributes to the scientific direction of a research resource with a commitment to rigorous and reproducible research, including unit and system testing, and version control.

Responsibilities

  • Uses subject matter and best practices knowledge to perform lab and / or research-related duties and tasks. Works independently to assist with project design.
  • Solves complex problems relating to the administration of projects, including planning new procedures, adapting existing procedures to the needs of the project, and making significant contributions to methodology.
  • Guides data collection, evaluation and analysis. Designs and manages databases. Writes reports, articles and manuscripts.
  • Presents research findings at meetings and conferences, as well as to funding agencies. Conducts literature reviews. Develops and maintains liaisons and effective working relations with groups and individuals, agencies, and the public to encourage cooperative management strategies or to develop information and interpret findings.
  • Uses specialized depth and breadth of expertise to lead and conduct research experiments.
  • Interprets and collects data and trains others in the interpretation of data. Leads the dissemination of data and significantly contributes to scientific publications and grant writing.
  • Leads others to solve complex problems, providing expertise to the team which includes of scientists and clinicians from the University and nationally.
  • Provides expertise to identify protocol problems, inform investigators of problems, or assist in problem resolution efforts, such as protocol revisions.

Provides expertise to evaluate factors such as sample collection processes, data management plans, or potential subject risk.

Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education :

Minimum requirements include a PhD in related field.

Work Experience :

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 7+ years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Certifications :

Preferred Qualifications

Education :

Doctoral degree in related biological sciences field.

Experience :

  • Authorship of publications (books, articles, reports or book chapters) that have been cited by other scholars.
  • Supervising junior research staff.
  • Managing research projects.

Preferred Competencies

  • Strong written and communication skills.
  • Extensive experience managing projects, including delivering results on deadline.
  • Manage all aspects of the project with minimal supervision.
  • Strong quantitative skills, including statistical inference.
  • Commitment to rigorous and reproducible research, including unit and system testing, and version control.
  • Commitment to coordinating research projects with leadership.
