This brand new role within our team and we’re seeking a forward thinking occupational therapist to support the team in evolving our service to reach its full potential.
We have received additional funding to grow our team and meeting increasing service demands and complexity. We are advertising several new roles and seeking an interest for permanent team members for full or part time positions to develop depth and experience to our service.
Clinically, this role will lead the occupational therapy team on our orthopaedic ward. The vast majority of this 36-bedded unit cares for adults following a traumatic injury.
The unit also includes a rotational occupational therapist. Trauma patients can be spread across various wards, such as ED, ICU, critical care, orthopaedics, neurosurgery and general surgery, each of which has their own allied health specialists.
To ensure co-ordinated and consistent, high quality care is delivered across the hospital, this role may also provide a consult service or provide occupational therapy input to trauma patients across the hospital.
Professionally, sharing your skills and knowledge with peers is an integral part of the role. There is a strong focus on including use of evidence based practice.
This role will work in tandem with the Trauma Physiotherapist and the ICU based Trauma Team to drive quality improvement activities to develop and improve an equitable and high quality service for trauma patients in the acute hospital environment.
The role would include working closely with Trauma team, National Trauma Network and assist in implementing HQSC trauma project work.
Moū About you
We are looking for a passionate and enthusiastic clinician with an interest in service development who is eager to advance their expertise and clinical knowledge in the specialty of moderate and major trauma.
Contributing to trauma rehabilitation plans, you will formulate and deliver individualised inter-professional intervention, using appropriate clinical assessment, reasoning skills and evidence informed practice.
Working with a diverse group of patients with significant health needs, you’ll demonstrate excellent clinical and communication skills and have a flexible, problem solving approach.
Experience in initiating and leading change would be preferred but for the right candidate, we can work together to build your skills in this area.

- Five or more years’ experience
- Have registration as an Occupational Therapist with the with Occupational Therapy Board NZ with a current annual practicing certificate
- Commitment to mentoring and support rotational Occupational Therapists as required.
- Weekend cover roster (approx. once every 8 weeks for up to 4 hours)

The Wellington Occupational Therapy Team work largely in the inpatient setting at Wellington Regional Hospital. The team is currently made up of 13 occupational therapists, with 5 team members in the rotational group and will soon grow to a team of 17.
We work in the acute setting, assessing and treating patients to contribute to successful discharges and acute hospital flow.
We are part of a wider Te Whatu Ora team that has occupational therapists working across multiple sites including Kenepuru, Hutt Hospital, community, outpatients and rehabilitation settings with opportunity to network across the district.
We have a friendly, dynamic and enthusiastic team with a team approach. We are building our team and we are in a position to develop depth and quality in our service, and better meet the increasing complexity of patients requiring intervention.
This occupational therapy team work cohesively to collectively respond to capacity demands. We promote an open and respectful culture with shared mentorship and clinical discussion.
