Class Summary
This position will be an ongoing commitment of 8 hours per week which will include regular office hours with community and every other week check ins with City Staff.
This position is likely to be a mix of regular business hours and night and weekend work.
The ideal person for this has established relationships with East African residents in Hopkins and is comfortable bridging relationships between these groups and the City.
CLASS SUMMARY :
Under direct supervision, this position works with City Staff throughout the organization to provide a connection to key communities and help build a relationship with local government.

This is a part-time position that intends to meet the following City goals :
- Evolving a stronger relationship between community and local government;
- Help build power of underrepresented communities most impacted by barriers to public engagement and increasing participation in meaningful and inclusive public engagement;
- Supporting a shifting culture of how city government engages with community in decision-making; and
- serving as a bridge for continuing dialogue, advancing racial equity, and surfacing the ideas, concerns, and dreams of community members.
Essential Duties
CLASSIFICATION ESSENTIAL DUTIES :
This job description is intended to represent only the key areas of responsibilities; specific position assignments will vary depending on the business needs of the department.
- Hold consistent office hours in community one time per week.
- Serve as a trusted voice within a community.
- Assist with the evolution of the Community Connectors program itself to meet objectives listed above.
- Facilitate direct dialogue with City Staff, including regular updates to city council (e.g., written staff updates every other month, Community Connector spoken presentations to city council twice per year) to share a summary of ideas, issues, and concerns heard from communities.
- Sharing feedback on the Racial Equity Strategic Action Plan to help inform City decision-making.
- Supporting access to public engagement and programming opportunities City-wide and project based.
- Assisting with City communications and social media to engage underrepresented communities.
- Building power, collective self-interest, and community through a set of co-created techniques and potential gatherings or events
- Collecting feedback on reducing barriers to public engagement for underrepresented communities.
- Establishing reputation as go-to person in the community for addressing issues and accessing opportunities, while actively limiting gatekeeping
- Enhancing leadership skills to advance potential employment opportunities, including with the city.
- Co-designing and co-facilitating public events and education sessions.

Positions in this class typically require reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Walking and standing are required only occasionally.
Working Conditions :
This position will work in an office at City Hall as well as expected spend significant time in community. While performing the duties of this position, this position is occasionally exposed to outdoor weather and working conditions.
