Animal Control Deputy

This position will either be full time or part time. Please apply and specify on your application if you are interested in full or part time work.

If the position is filled as a part timer, the required hours worked per week will be 28 hours.

POSITION CONCEPT :

Position is responsible for responding to animal control complaints and enforcement of animal control statutes. Will coordinate on-scene animal control activities with Patrol Division personnel.

Develop and maintain a working relationship with the equine community of the parish.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

The most important and essential job duty of this position is attitude and includes the following : getting along with co-workers, being respectful to members of the community, making sure all employees under his / her command are working together as a team and functioning under pressure.

Other duties and responsibilities may include but are not limited to :

• Develops, maintains, and adheres to standard operating procedures for animal control.
• Capture various types of animals including diseased, unlicensed, dangerous, and stray animals by means of traps, catch pole, or other accepted means.
• Loads and unloads animals from animal control vehicle.
• Issues notices, warnings, citations and / or arrests violators of animal control statutes.
• Compiles and maintains required custody of all animal control records and reports.
• Coordinates procurement and inventory of appropriate supplies and materials.
• Enforces animal control related state statutes.
• Any other duties specified by Special Operations Sergeant

QUALIFICATIONS :

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE :

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Minimum 18 years of age
• Valid Louisiana driver's license
• No criminal history
• P.O.S.T. Certification
• Successful completion of required drug test and physical examination
• Good physical condition

LANGUAGE AND MATHEMATICAL SKILLS :

• Ability to read and comprehend reports and manuals.
• Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of employees, command staff and the general public in person and over the telephone.
• Ability to apply concepts of basic mathematics.

REASONING ABILITY :

• Ability to deal with situations requiring tact, diplomacy, understanding, fairness, firmness and judgement.
• Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS :

Current and Valid Louisiana Driver's License

WORK SCHEDULE :

This position will either be full time or part time.*

Employee is required to work flexible hours when and if needed. In some circumstances employee may be subject to call-out 24 hours a day.

EMPLOYMENT RELATIONS :

Employment with SMPSO is for no specific period of time. Your employment with SMPSO will be at will, meaning that either you or the Sheriff may terminate your employment at any time and for any reason, with or without cause.

Although your job duties, title, compensation and benefits, as well as the SMPSO's personnel policies and procedures, may change from time to time, the at will nature of your employment will not be affected by these changes.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD :

All employees of the SMPSO will have a probationary period of one (1) year. A job performance evaluation will be done after six (6) months.
