General Responsibilities

1. Operates as a member of the Community Services Division team.

2. Facility management including implementation of daily routine.

3. Management of client treatment.

4. Responding to the 24-hour crisis line including the use of crisis intervention, assessment, diversion and referral skills.

Essential Functions

  • Demonstrates ability to make sound judgments, provide appropriate client services within the guidelines provided, and implement daily routine of Kathy Paulsen - Hope House (KPHH) residence including chore schedules, room checks, and supervision of meal serving and clean-up.
  • Manage the facility as a clean, comfortable, and orderly environment intervening directly with clients to that end and ensuring the facility meets health department and fire safety codes.
  • Is aware of emergency procedures with regard to (a) building safety (b) client emergency, and (c) 24-hour coverage in order to respond to emergencies with immediacy while utilizing guidelines.
  • Answers a 24-hour crisis line with awareness of agencies within DuPage County and the general metropolitan area, as possible resources for clients in crisis and callers at risk of homelessness.
  • Assesses clients utilizing the guidelines provided and complete the necessary forms and records, and make appropriate referrals for all callers not given intake appointments at KPHH.
  • Within the guidelines provided, implements and provides a range of counseling services depending on client needs (i.e. individual or family counseling, crisis intervention, budget counseling, personal hygiene, money management, job seeking skills, etc.

Assesses clients’ eligibility for rental assistance, transportation, childcare assistance, and other basic needs support.

Consults with Supervisor in order to fill out necessary forms and keep records of assistance provided.

  • Completes daily checklist and shift exchange to ensure duties / information sharing is consistent for program continuity.
  • In regards to residential clients, observes all intake and termination procedures for shelter; prepares all necessary forms;

case notes, facilitates individualized client plan and follow-up on these plans throughout their shelter stay and termination.

Is familiar with community agencies and resources to serve the needs of the population who are at high risk of becoming homeless and who are without shelter and networks, when appropriate, with the community-at-large, depending on client needs.

Serves as advocate for clients and make appropriate professional contacts.

  • Encourage clients to consider alternatives and to think through the consequences of their choices, which may lead to future homelessness issues.
  • Work cooperatively with the KPHH Supervisor and other appropriate staff and persons to ensure that the needs of Homeless Services clients are addressed with dignity and respect.
  • Respond to emergencies involving Transitional & Permanent Supportive Housing Program participants; inform TH / PSH staff, the Assistant Director of Community Services of the emergency and any response made to residents.

In the event a TH / PSH staff is unavailable, the Assistant Director of Community Services should be notified immediately.

The Director of Community Services may be notified in the absence of the Assistant Director.

Each employee of KPHH shall be held responsible for the items outlined in the Agency policies as well as the KPHH policies and procedures manual.

Requirements :

A high school diploma or equivalent is required for this position. A Bachelor’s degree is preferred with preference in areas of the human services field.

All degrees must come from a regionally accredited educational institution which has U.S. Department of Education approval.

  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience providing direct service in social work, crisis intervention, or counseling is preferred.
  • Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work with individuals / families in crisis situations.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work with persons from diverse ethnic, racial and social backgrounds.
  • Ability to relate to individuals in a warm, non-judgmental manner.
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, and Teams.
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills. Must be fluent in spoken English so that clients and other service providers can understand the case worker when advocacy services, counseling, direction, etc. are provided.
  • Passage of complete background clearance, Tuberculosis (TB) Test, and any other required testing or clearances.
  • A valid driver’s license, reliable means of transportation and proof of liability insurance is required.
