Department Summary

Our research mission is driven in part by particular strengths represented by five primary centers / institutes : The Center for Healthy Aging, The Institute for Translational Research, The Institute for Health Disparities, The North Texas Eye Research Institute, and the Center for Human Identification.

Within the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Genetics (MIG), there are twenty-three full-time faculty and two adjunct faculty members with diverse research interests spanning molecular genetics, cellular immunology, microbiology, cancer, and health disparities and supported by more than $9 million in federal grant funding.

We foster a highly collaborative and collegial environment in which the faculty, trainees, and staff work together to advance innovative, cutting-edge scientific discovery related to human health.

The department provides high quality training for students interested in careers in biomedical research or medicine. The goals of our graduate program are (1) to provide a broad and sound education in microbiology, immunology, and genetics of human disease, and (2) to provide rigorous research training in an environment dedicated to advancing biomedical science.

The department has numerous trainees including DO / PhD, PhD, and MS students as well as postdoctoral fellows. The trainees and faculty in the department are a cohesive group from diverse backgrounds which fosters scientific innovation and discovery.

We support graduate training programs in genetics, cell biology, immunology, microbiology, biochemistry, and cancer biology.

Our faculty and trainees also take full advantage of the tremendous breadth of expertise and knowledge across the UNT Health Science Center (HSC)

Position Overview

The Associate Director is responsible for assisting the Executive Director in supporting and advancing the overarching mission and goals of the Center for Human Identification, in complement with the Health Science Center (HSC) and UNT System.

The Associate Director serves on the faculty, and is the direct supervisor of other faculty members at CHI, teaching classes, performing research, and identifying and participating in collaborative partnerships.

The Associate Director also assists the Executive Director by serving on university committees and as a liaison to external organizations as a senior managerial representative of CHI.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in a Physical, Natural, or Applied Science.
  • Five or more years senior leadership experience in a forensic DNA laboratory.
  • Thorough knowledge of principles, techniques and procedures utilized in a forensic DNA laboratory; knowledge of proper safety protocols.
  • Thorough knowledge of MPS technologies, SNP testing, alternative DNA markers, WGS, and Forensic Genetic Genealogy.
  • Thorough understanding of accreditation standards and requirements for forensic laboratories.
  • Prior experience in a faculty role with a demonstrated ability of procuring outside grant funding, recruitment of students, and pedagogical development of new curricula.
  • Transparent and high integrity leadership with a strong work ethic.
  • Experience and skill in working with and establishing successful relationships with the scientific community, government agencies, law enforcement and other relevant organizations.
  • High level strategic thinking and planning. Ability to envision and convey the organization’s mission and strategic future.
  • Demonstrated ability to oversee and collaborate with staff.
  • A history of financial responsibility and accountability; including analysis, decision making and reporting.
  • Demonstrated record of publishing in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
  • Membership in relevant professional organization(s) relevant to forensic laboratory management and the scientific field.
  • Ability to properly communicate in a clear, concise and effective manner, both orally and in writing.
  • A demonstrated record of excellence in teaching and training to scientific and non-scientific audiences.
  • Experience interacting with stakeholders in the law enforcement community and members of the media.
  • Experience mentoring students, trainees, and junior staff in a forensic DNA laboratory setting.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong public speaking ability.
  • Solid organizational abilities, including planning, delegating, program development and task facilitation.

Job Duties :

  • Manage faculty members at CHI, mentoring them, monitoring their work, ensuring their access to resources, and conducting their performance evaluations.
  • Position expected to include a faculty appointment in the School of Biomedical Sciences, including teaching, student mentoring, and serving on university committees.
  • Oversee daily operations of Research and Development laboratory.
  • Manage ongoing strategic research priorities and actively collaborate with outside academic and industry leaders to identify new initiatives for human identification.
  • Identify and pursue new award and grant funding opportunities.
  • Supervise and conduct scholarly research and disseminate a scholarly product.
  • Serve as a professional and ethical liaison to internal and external officials and organizations as a senior managerial representative of CHI.
  • Coordinate with CHI management to ensure adherence to and implementation of CHI and HSC policies and procedures and monitor the status of ongoing projects.
  • Communicate effectively with HSC leadership, providing requested and required information necessary for efficient operation in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Assist in ensuring successful fiscal management for CHI, operating within the approved budget, safeguarding maximum resource utilization, and maintaining the organization in a positive financial position.
  • Coordinate with designated employees to create, revise, implement new office policies, procedures and guidelines as needed.
  • Ensure all licensing, accreditation, research and compliance standards, and statutory ethics requirements are met and maintained in support of all casework and research initiatives central to CHI’s mission.
