The National Multiple Sclerosis Society mobilizes people and resources to drive research for a cure and to address the challenges of everyone affected by MS.

To fulfill this mission, the Society funds cutting-edge research, drives change through advocacy, facilitates professional education, collaborates with MS organizations around the world, and provides programs and services designed to help people with MS and their families move their lives forward.

We partner with volunteers to accomplish our work. Staff members engage volunteers through effective and timely communications, facilitating meaningful opportunities, and continually seeking and providing feedback for reciprocal growth and learning.

The Senior Director of Health Equity leads the development of the healthcare access strategy in identifying the prevalent and emerging health equity and diversity issues affecting people with MS and oversees implementation of innovative programs and initiatives designed to bring solutions and minimize disparities.

Working alongside the Senior Director of External Stakeholders, the Senior Director of Health Equity will build and enhance relationships with health equity and diversity experts, partner organizations, academic institutions, and researchers.

The Senior Director of Health Equity will serve as a trusted resource across the Society and external partners and will lead cross-functional collaboration to advance the Society's health equity and diversity goals, programs, and initiatives.

A key member of the healthcare access leadership and management team, this position will provide perspective and counsel, leadership, and management contributions to the VP of Healthcare Access and the EVP of Advocacy and Healthcare Access.

Essential Functions / Responsibility

Content Leadership (40%)

  • Provide subject matter expertise on prevalent and emerging health equity issues that impact people affected by MS who are experiencing health disparities.
  • Develop and implement outreach, education and engagement strategies for people affected by MS who are experiencing health disparities;

including but not limited to : veterans, rural communities and communities that lack neurologic and MS specialty care, pediatric populations and youth, LGBTQ+, and ethnically diverse populations.

  • Mentor and advise members of the advocacy and healthcare access team to enhance opportunities to meet the needs of populations experiencing health disparities.
  • Oversee the development of tools, resources, and services that promote knowledge exchange, thought leadership and support best practices for healthcare access team members to meet needs related to equity and diversity in the delivery of health care to improve outcomes for people affected by MS.
  • Work within the healthcare access team and cross functionally to establish and analyze outcome measures to drive continuous improvement.

Health Equity Program and Initiatives Development and Implementation (30%)

  • Identify, develop, and oversee implementation of programs and initiatives that support the Society's strategic plan that are impacted by social drivers of health to improve the health outcomes for people affected by MS who are experiencing health disparities.
  • Working cross-functionally, lead efforts to obtain grants and funding to support the Society's health equity work, and manage implementation of largescale grants, including outputs from those initiatives such as publications, posters and presentations of key learnings and findings.
  • Serve as a team lead and subject matter expert for Society health equity initiatives, including leading cross functional project steering committees focused on improving access to care in medically under-resourced communities.
  • Support VP of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and serve on cross-functional work teams and speak externally at events and conferences as appropriate.
  • Effectively manage external contracts and consultants, to enhance and promote the Soceity's health equity work.

Staff supervision (10%)

  • Responsible for hiring, onboarding and management of direct reports.
  • Ensure staff have the tools, knowledge, and resources necessary to perform all elements of job duties as well as provide opportunities for professional development to promote career growth.
  • Conduct regular check-ins to monitor progress, provide feedback, and offer guidance and support where needed to ensure staff are fully supported in their role.
  • Ensures staff have the tools, knowledge, and resources necessary to perform job duties effectively as well as opportunities for professional development.
  • Coach and collaborate on goal-setting and professional development plans and conduct formal and informal performance conversations.
  • Hold staff accountable to the cultural values of the organization and ensure they follow Society operating principles.
  • Lead a high performing virtual team with trust, clarity, shared goals, and celebrated wins.

Strategic Partnerships (20%)

  • Establish strategic partnerships and represent the Society on boards, committees and other internal or external groups to promote access to care and quality of care.
  • Provide strategic direction and drive implementation of the Memorandum of Agreement between the Veterans Administration and the Society.
  • Develop a national strategy for partnership with Veterans Affairs to serve Veterans and their families living with MS.
  • Increase organizational capacity and reach through partnerships with community and local organizations who are committed to health equity.
  • Work collaboratively to identify opportunities to reduce healthcare disparities and improve health equity.

Minimum Requirements :

  • Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 7-10 years of relevant experience in the non-profit and healthcare industries.
  • Substantial familiarity with non-profit and healthcare industries.
  • Experience leading / managing health equity initiatives or reducing health disparities through collaborative efforts.
  • Knowledge of how health outcomes are affected by social drivers of health and experience managing interventions that address them.
  • A demonstrated leader with professional credibility, and ability to collaborate and cultivate relationships with internal and external constituents, and to represent the Society externally.
  • Ability to apply professional discretion and judgment to sensitive situations involving a diverse set of stakeholders with competing priorities.
  • Strong interpersonal, emotional intelligence, and negotiation skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Technical / Other :

  • Commitment to the mission, vision, cultural values, and expectations of the National MS Society
  • Position will be required to drive / travel on Society business. Candidate must possess a valid driver's license, proof of insurance and reliable transportation.

The Society does run motor vehicle checks for all positions which require driving and the applicant must meet the Society guidelines.

  • Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Society and database systems
  • Availability to work occasional nights and weekends to support events, committee meetings, etc.

Compensation & Benefits Info :

Estimated hiring compensation range for this role is $82,000- $100,000 based on our average compensation schedule. Final offers will be based on candidategeographic location and consider career experience and may vary from this range due to these and other factors.

This position is in the Management career band and a level of 2 (M2).
