Assistant Vice President, Institutional Equity

University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) is seeking an Assistant Vice President for Institutional Equity (AVP) in the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ODEI).
Reporting to the Vice President & Chief Diversity & Equity Officer, the AVP will be responsible for overseeing institutional compliance both stateside and overseas, with Title IX of the Education Amendments Act, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and any other federal and state civil rights laws and regulations.
The AVP will be responsible for conducting investigations for stateside staff, faculty, and students and will work with overseas Equal Opportunity Officers (EOOs) to ensure that investigations are timely, accurate, and consistent with the university's policies.
The AVP will contribute to the overall success and strategic plan of the university and specifically contribute to developing and realizing the goals and objectives outlined in the DEI Roadmap for Success.
In this role, the AVP will manage the Title IX Coordinator / ADA Compliance Officer, the Fair Practices / Equal Opportunity Officer, the Employee Accommodations Manager, and the Senior DEI Manager and Investigator.
This AVP will be part of a dynamic team of DEI professionals that create and curate meaningful, measurable experiences that transform lives, and aintroduce restorative, affirming practices through interventions that cultivate a sense of belonging, equity, and justice.
Hybrid role (at least 3 days / week) requiring relocation to the MD / DC / Northern VA metro area.
Additional responsibilities include :
- Ensuring UMGC's compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements for Title IX, Title VI, Title VII, ADA, and all other federal and state discrimination and harassment laws, regulations, case law, and applicable university policies
- Ensuring policies are in place to identify any barriers to employment based on sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, race, color, religious creed, national origin, or accessibility
- Assisting managers in developing solutions to ensure all individuals benefit from equal employment opportunities (EEOs)
- Supporting equity efforts across the organization and managing equity compliance staff to help ensure processes are conducted promptly, effectively, and equitably
- Coordinating the delivery of training on university policies and procedures related to discrimination and harassment, sexual misconduct, and information about the complaint procedures and investigation processes
- Partnering with Human Resources (HR) on implementing the university's Affirmative Action Program (AAP)
- Identifying any gaps and developing solutions implementing the AAP
- Designing and implementing an internal audit and reporting system to measure the effectiveness of the university's AAP
- Providing annual external specialized training for the Equity Compliance Team supporting university students and employees
- Collaborating with HR, Student Affairs, and Academic Affairs to develop proactive strategies, practices, procedures, and advice for all levels of people leaders to remain compliant as well as preventing adverse impact and potential discrimination and / or harassment in employment, programs, and related activities
- Collaborating on the global delivery of diversity programs including identifying global trends
- Performing other job-related duties as assigned
Required education & experience
- Preferred education & experience : An earned Juris Doctorate, or other earned doctorate in a relevant field from an accredited institution of higher learning;
- successful experience working in a decentralized higher education environment; knowledge of DEI and organizational change models, and experience with the most current research and data to understand and implement DEI practices;
- demonstrated experience facilitating dialogue with and among employees to cultivate an environment of inclusiveness, collegiality, shared inquiry and responsibility, and the collective accomplishments that will move DEI work forward;
- experience translating data and analytics to develop insights while informing and driving decisions and measuring impact;
skilled in conflict resolution; and a firm understanding of state, federal, and country laws that may impact or regulate DEI and access-related practices.
