A Brief Overview
Stanford Medicine is an ecosystem comprising the School of Medicine and the pediatric and adult health care delivery systems.
The Sr. Director of Architecture & Building Design will be responsible for working within this integrated structure to support, develop and guide the architectural aesthetic and design language for Stanford Health Care (SHC) and Stanford Medicine Children's Health (SMCH).
The position will report to the Sr. Vice President of Planning, Design and Construction and is expected to exercise significant influence in relevant program and project policies and is accountable for job duties as outlined below.
What you will do
- Develop and maintain Stanford design brand and aesthetic to support the business entities of both SHC and SMCH organizations.
- Work closely with the Stanford University Campus Architect to implement and provide guidance on the Stanford University Medical Center (SUMC) Design Guidelines.
- Partner with Real Estate and Land Use teams to support the organizations’ pursuits and strategic objectives of development in various geographic areas with each of the jurisdictions.
- Partner with the CIP Directors to develop best management practices and provide design direction in the execution of the capital programs.
- Develop and define architectural guidelines and standards in support of the organizations’ capital programs.
- Lead and define the development, implementation and maintenance of short-and long-range planning to provide guidance and direction for the executive and medical leadership in support of the established goals of the organizations.
- Work closely with internal departments to coordinate design guidelines and provide architectural solutions that support the operational objectives of the facilities.
- Collaborate with other departments to identify and influence policy and end-to-end process improvement.
- Meet the highest quality standards in service and product by implementing LEAN design and construction principles.
- Drive innovation in architecture to support the future of healthcare and the delivery of care that is Uniquely Stanford.
- Recommend and implement sustainable practices in support of the organizations’ strategic objectives in conjunction with the Sustainability Program Office.
- Lead architectural design jurisdictional reviews and approvals in conjunction with Land Use and Entitlement teams as well as the integrated structure of Stanford Medicine.
- Develop presentation materials to support the SHC, SMCH, TV Board of Directors and University Board of Trustees.
- Coordinate with the Art Commission to create spaces to showcase SHC and SMCH’s significant and growing art collection.
- Ensure compliance with applicable laws, building codes, energy and sustainability guidelines, and standards of good practice governing the safety of the hospital and outpatient facilities.
Education Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a work-related field / discipline from an accredited college or university.
Experience Qualifications
Ten (10) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience, including two (2) years of supervisory responsibility.

- Ability to communicate complex concepts in simple form to non-building users to understand the appropriate use and limits of the information provided.
- Ability to budget, make financial projections including strong analytical skills and ability to prepare meaningful reports for the executive leadership.

- Leadership skills required to handle potentially sensitive situations by applying communication and consultative skills in working with internal and external constituent groups to gain understanding and reach acceptance of optimal decisions.

- Knowledge of computer systems and software used in functional area.
- Knowledge of local, state and federal regulatory requirement related to the functional area.

Base Pay Scale : Generally starting at $102.92 - $136.37 per hour.
The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
