Univ-Center for the Advancement of Technology and Learning (CATL) - Director of AI Integration and Creative Learning - Faculty - Open Rank / Non-tenured

Position purpose : The role of the Director of AI Integration and Creative Learning is to contribute to MUSC’s AI academic strategic plan to harness the power of AI as part of MUSC’s vision, mission and OneMUSC strategy.

The AI academic strategic plan has two overarching strategic goals of pioneering transformative changes in healthcare delivery, research, and education through AI;

and create an AI-competent workforce prepared to thrive in a digital world.

The Director of AI Integration and Creative Learning role will bolster our capacity to explore the intersection of AI and education.

This role will facilitate interdisciplinary teams across colleges and Academic Affairs Faculty in investigating, evaluating, and implementing AI technologies for teaching and learning through the lens of leveraging AI for humanity, learning, and equity.

This position will be responsible for partnering with various entities across the university, including the Education Innovation Advocates’ Faculty to create an AI adoption plan and mechanisms for sharing and creating a database of use cases.

The position will collaboratively lead the creation of an AI integrated curriculum for faculty and students as well as create a clear pathway for faculty to research AI-driven innovations in education.

Candidates must possess an integrated knowledge of cognitive / educational psychology, information science and education technology.

The ideal candidate will have a record of publications in these areas and will strengthen and complement the instructional design and technology team in the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning.

In addition to demonstrating a passion for educational development and learning new technologies, successful candidates will possess an understanding of instructional challenges arising from technology-based learning, experience in developing instructional materials, excellent interpersonal and presentation skills, experience working in a team environment, as well as an appreciation for working with diverse audiences.

In addition to supporting current teaching and learning activities, the position will identify, design, and enable opportunities for future learning.

An ideal candidate will be committed to engaging and inspiring the MUSC community with high-impact learning experiences and ways to expand the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) in AI innovation.

Position responsibilities :

Partner with faculty, educational technology staff, and learners to create and implement training resources that will form a shared knowledge base for AI in Education.

  • Assist faculty with integrating AI- enabled and enhanced technology into their teaching, helping them explore the endless possibilities of these resources, and understand the opportunities and challenges of these transformative tools.
  • Collaborate with visionary faculty, staff, instructional designers, and learners to develop groundbreaking AI-enhanced high-impact practices that are immersive, interactive, and foster deep learning.
  • Create a repository of AI Augmented activities and assessments that can be used across colleges.
  • Research and evaluate emerging AI platform technologies, pedagogies, and practices and provide ongoing ideas, guidance, and recommendations to the MUSC community.
  • Foster a culture of excellence by developing and delivering training and support programs for faculty and staff related to AI augmented teaching and learning.
  • Partner with other stakeholders to explore the feasibility of developing online continuing education programs in AI.
  • Partner with the SoTL learning community to create a pathway and a visible infrastructure to position MUSC as a leader in SoTL related to AI augmented teaching and learning.
  • Build partnerships across MUSC and with other institutions for collaboration for education to complement the existing MUSC-Clemson AI Hub.
  • Support the integration of AI-enhanced educational technologies (including but not limited to : Microsoft 365, Feedback Fruits, D2L Brightspace, Bing, etc.

Requirements :

  • A minimum of a master’s degree in a related field Instructional Design and Technology, Education Research and Evaluation, Information Science), PhD preferred.
  • Certificate or other training in Artificial Intelligence
  • At least three years’ experience in research related to user experience, information science, educational technology or related area.
  • Strong understanding of natural language processing (NLP) concepts and techniques.
  • Knowledge of and experience in using AI systems including use in education for faculty and students.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of the intersection of AI and education; instructional design theories principles, methods, and techniques for adult learning.
  • Awareness of current and future trends in educational technologies and AI-augmented teaching and learning.
  • Project management and coordination capabilities, including the ability to manage tasks and projects with multiple and overlapping deadlines.
  • Proficiency in explaining technical concepts in non-technical terms to diverse stakeholders, including faculty, students, staff, and administrators.
  • Problem-solving ability with a strong knack for applying critical and logical analysis to scenarios in the context of educational technology use.
  • A creative and positive attitude toward maintaining a team-oriented work environment
  • Ability to model empathy, compassion and emotional intelligence
  • A record of excellent leadership, mentorship, organizational, and administrative skills

Supervision :

This position reports to the Executive Director of the Center for Advancement of Teaching and Learning.
