Job Summary :
The Head Cheer Coach will manage all personnel and aspects of the St. John’s University Cheerleading program and provide leadership, innovative vision and strategic planning for an NCAA Division I member institution, part of the BIG EAST Conference.
In addition, the individual in this position will be responsible for the recruitment, supervision, evaluation, and performance of student-athletes and represent the University and the Vincentian Mission of St.
John’s while continuing to elevate the St. John’s cheerleading program on the national level and emulating the Athletic Department’s Expect to Win culture.
Essential Functions
Practices
Ensure that practices are structured and organized with a safe practice environment for every routine.
Ensure all practice routines are certified and in compliance with USA Cheer regulations.
Required to teach proper, progressional technique for all movements, including collegiate pyramids, collegiate stunts, and all other routines.
Be able to moderate practice routines based on skill level and the strength and coordination required for each technique
Should have experience in teaching and educating each team member on proper safety guidelines, specific to each technique as it pertains to 2.
5 high pyramids, single and multi-base partner stunt techniques and inversions, and flipping basket tosses.
Recruiting
Lead the recruitment of prospective students.
Manage and ensure that all auditions and clinics are organized, well-advertised, and well-attended.
Ensure all insurance guidelines and safety procedures are met.
Team Management & Representation
Be responsible for educating team members about their high-profile nature and the importance of representation of the university.
Encourage a positive attitude whenever interacting with staff, faculty, and opposing teams.
Must ensure appropriate attire for team travel, practice, games, and events.
Help ensure student-athletes are always respectful.
Manage all personnel and aspects of the program to include the preparation of student-athletes through practice sessions and preparation for performances.
Administration
Establish and maintain a working knowledge of the NCAA and BIG EAST Conference rules and regulations and St. John’s University policies and procedures.
Maintain these operating guidelines, policies, and procedures to ensure 100% compliance throughout the calendar year for all personnel associated with the program.
Ensure team members always follow all ticket policies.
With safety as a priority, ensure that all safety procedures outlined by the USA Cheer are strictly adhered to.
Games & Appearances
Manage and oversee team at all required athletic contests and events.
With the premier focus in basketball home contests, ensure that the team is always on time and prepared for all pre-game activities, follow dress code policy, and be uniformed, especially when traveling to and from games.
Ensure team remains positive and professional during games in lieu of many demands and distractions.
Maintain high standards of conduct and discipline.
Competencies

On court skill development (stunting, tumbling, and spotting required).
Strong organizational skills.
Academic monitoring.
Supervisory Responsibility
This position monitors the student athletes well as assistant coach and volunteer staff.
May not be listed on the Restricted, Suspended and Ineligible persons list from USA Cheer.
Physical Demands
While performing this job's duties, the employee must stand and perform duties on the tumbling mat, basketball court and soccer field.
The employee should be able to spot stunts and tumbling to create a safe environment.
Position Type / Expected Hours of Work
Part time.
Various weekday nights and weekends.
Travel
Travel is to basketball games at Madison Square Garden, UBS Arena, and Barclays Center with the potential of postseason tournament travel.
Additional travel will be to the UCA Nationals and UCA Camp.
Required Education and Experience :
Bachelor’s degree.
Minimum two (2) years coaching experience at the collegiate level.
USA Safety & Education College Rules.
USA Cheer member certified.
CrashCourse Concussion Education.
Athlete Protection Courses for Coaches.
Valid Driver’s license.
Background checks required.
CPR / AED Certified.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the hourly salary range for this position is $21.00-$23.00. St. John’s University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education / training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
This position may be relocated to any of St. John’s University’s physical locations at any time.
