Job Summary :
Responsible to section, stain and mount tissue specimens in preparation for microscopic examination by the pathologist. Assists the pathologist in making various examinations on submitted tissue specimens and subsequent preparations.
Performance of duties is in accordance with policies and guidelines established with Baptist Health.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities :
The following is a summary of the major functions of this individual's job
Labels all cassettes and receptacles with number corresponding to specimen accession number.
Files and stores slides and blocks.
Numbers specimens received into logbook and computer system with proper identification as to the patient and specimen type.
Prepares all fluids for tissue processing and replaces used fluids.
Processes all tissue specimens for microscopic examination.
Embeds all processed tissue specimens in appropriate embedding media.
Prepares microscopic slides of all embedded tissue for examination by pathologist using both routine and special stains.
Assists with processing of specimen collected in C.T. scan and frozen sections as
required.
Performs special stains, histochemical methods and immunoperoxidase methods.
Prepares and stains hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) slides / cell blocks for cytological preparations of various body fluids.
Participates in educational activities for continuing education and professional development.
Demonstrates positive customer relations by maintaining a good rapport and cooperative working relationship with all customers.
Participates in the Laboratory Quality Assurance Program.
Completes annual competency validation, mandatory safety programs and OSHA requirements.
Minimum Education, Training and Experience Required :
A. Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college / university with a minimum of 60 semester hours of biology and chemistry or previous experience as a Histology Technician to qualify for the in-house training program (this qualification for the training program will be determined by the leadership of the Clinical Laboratory).
B. ASCP certification or eligible for certification as Histology Technician by ASCP required within 6 months of the completion of the 1-year in-house training program.
