PRIMARY PURPOSE / GENERAL DESCRIPTION :

Reporting to the Senior Communications Manager and working closely with the Creative Director and the Office of Marketing and Communications, the Writer / Editor informs, inspires, and persuades our target audiences to engage with the College through multimedia storytelling that supports the Scripps mission and brand.

The Office of Marketing and Communications reports to the Vice President of External Relations and Institutional Advancement within the External Relations and Institutional Advancement (ERIA) division.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

  • Develop an editorial and video strategy that supports the College mission and increases the awareness and reputation of the College with external audiences.
  • Develop content for philanthropy, stewardship, engagement, and Admission as needed that increases audience engagement, donor gifts, and student enrollment.
  • Produce content for a wide range of projects, including Scripps magazine, the College's external website, video, philanthropy, and Admission marketing and communication pieces.
  • Develop creative briefs and move concept to reality with branded, innovative, fresh copy.
  • Serve as editor and production manager of Scripps magazine,with creative direction of the Creative Director, which includes :
  • Propose issue themes and content that are aligned with the College's mission and the president's vision / communications platform
  • Manage production of all content, design, and proofing to execute two magazine issues per academic year on time and within budget
  • Understand and implementing the College's style and brand requirements; educating the Scripps community on the College's style guide and brand messaging.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or requested.
  • Support the College's Principles of Community and Principles of Diversity in the performance of job duties.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES :

Individual must possess knowledge, skills, and ability to successfully perform the essential functions of the position or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential function will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of the following skills and abilities :

  • Proven ability to write clear, engaging, and compelling copy in a variety of styles appropriate for the College's target audiences.
  • Extreme attention to detail with strong copyediting, line editing, proofreading, and fact-checking skills with demonstrated experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of writing, grammar, syntax, style, and punctuation.
  • Strong project-management and organizational skills; ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously in a deadline-driven environment.

Familiarity with a project management system is a plus.

  • Experience writing news or feature stories in a newsroom.
  • Works well as a thought partner and teammate.
  • Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills with ability to generate, assess, and exchange new ideas.
  • Willingness to take direction and work independently or with a team.
  • Ability to write quickly and accurately in a variety of styles and tones.
  • Adept at receiving and giving constructive criticism.
  • Familiarity with AP and Chicago styles.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS :

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE :

Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, English / humanities or related field, or any combination of education, training or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the job.

HOURS & CLASSIFICATION AND STATUS :

This is a regular, full-time, benefits-eligible, non-exempt position.

The regular hours of this position are Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

Hourly rate : $28.00-$34.00. The hourly rate of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY :

None.
