Overview :
The Mt. Laurel and Willingboro locations are only outpatient units, whereas the Special Test Unit (STU), located on the sixth floor in the main hospital is an outpatient and inpatient unit.
All are run by the hospital largely to serve diagnostic and therapeutic needs of the Gastroenterology Division.
The most common gastroenterology procedures are upper endoscopy and colonoscopy. In the pulmonary suite (STU only), endoscopy of the airway procedures is performed, and are commonly called bronchoscopy.
All units are staffed by surgical schedulers, patient service representatives, nurses, and GI technicians. Anesthesiology is present for all GI procedures.
Nurses rotate between the admission (Pre op), procedure suites, recovery (PACU) and pre-admission testing. They must be familiar with all roles and procedures in the GI Unit.
Short Description :
Some of the primary duties that GI technicians perform include :
GI Technicians prepare rooms and equipment before endoscopic procedures and clean up and sterilize after procedures
Maintaining an inventory of equipment and supplies for endoscopic procedure
Ensuring equipment functions properly
Preparing waiting and recovery rooms or procedure suites
Maintaining endoscopic equipment, including cleaning, disinfecting and calibrating instruments according to manufacturer guidelines
Transporting patients according to medical personnel instructions- Helping physicians and nurses perform endoscopic procedures
Attending training as necessary to enhance or refresh skills
Collecting specimens from patients
Collaborating effectively with other care providers regarding procedures and patients' conditions
Staying current on endoscopy developments by reading literature, speaking with colleagues or participating in professional organizations
Assists with Business Office Support duties and will be trained to EPIC applications and front desk registration & copay collection
Experience Required :
GI tech experience and / or patient care experience (medical assistant, patient care technician, etc.)
Must have ability to learn IDX and EPIC applications
Education Requirements :
High School Diploma or Equivalent required
License / Certification Requirements :
BLS from American Heart Association
