Checkr is seeking a VP of Legal to lead its commercial and corporate legal team. Reporting to the General Counsel, this role will primarily be responsible for providing strategic advice and supporting all customer, channel, and strategic partner deals.

You will also provide support on corporate transactions, including public company readiness, M&A, and other strategic transactions.

You will develop and implement strategies to support the company's rapid growth, focusing on scaling the legal team to meet evolving business needs.

The role requires a player / coach mindset with a willingness to take an active role in negotiating and drafting complex agreements when necessary.

You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including sales, partnerships, finance, procurement, and others to accelerate business transactions and drive deal closure.

The ideal candidate will possess strong business acumen, creativity, and the ability to accelerate business while mitigating risk.

The ideal candidate will have a balance of law firm, startup, and larger company experience with experience at a public company as an added bonus.

Responsibilities

  • Structure, review, draft and negotiate a variety of commercial agreements, including customer sales agreements, commercial partnership agreements, and services agreements.
  • Develop, improve and maintain contract templates, standard forms, corporate policies and processes, and training programs.
  • Build and manage processes, workflows, and trainings that can scale to keep up with our fast growth.
  • Advise and provide support on corporate transactional work, as well as assisting with the management of external counsel.
  • Provide advice on corporate governance best practices, including assistance on general board and shareholder matters, the formation of corporate governance policies, securities filings, and coordination of stock or equity issuance.
  • Contribute to cross-functional teams as a trusted advisor, creative problem-solver and strategic thinker.

What you bring

  • JD degree and a member in good standing of the California Bar
  • 15+ years of relevant commercial and corporate experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership role in-house in a high-growth technology company
  • Top-notch expertise in structuring, drafting and negotiating a wide variety of commercial contracts
  • Pragmatic strategist who can identify and resolve legal issues in the context of the company’s goals and risk thresholds
  • Demonstrated ability to scale a commercial legal team in a fast-paced, high-growth environment
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Thrives in an environment where you need to roll up your sleeves and own outcomes
  • Collaborative team player with excellent interpersonal skills and a good sense of humor

Individuals are expected to work from the office 2 to 3 days a week. In-office perks are provided, such as lunch four times a week, a commuter stipend, and an abundance of snacks and beverages.

We use geographic cost of labor as an input to develop ranges for our roles and as such, each location where we hire may have a different range.

The base salary range for this role is $325,000 to $375,000.
