Job Summary

The Michigan Center for Translational Pathology (MCTP) has an open position for a Research Lab Technician. We are seeking an energetic, highly motivated individual to join our cancer biology and therapeutic group.

The successful candidate is expected to thrive in a fast-paced dynamic environment. The candidate will work as part of a team screening small molecule inhibitors and performing functional validation for targeted therapy of cancer in vitro and in vivo.

The candidate will perform routine laboratory experimental procedures in one or more areas of work under the supervision of the Principal Investigator and / or higher level research staff.

The individual will perform these diverse duties as a member of a team of investigators.

The individual should be familiar with routine molecular biology techniques and have an educational background in biomedical sciences or related subjects.

Responsibilities*

  • Routine cell culture maintenance : passaging of adherent and suspension cells, freezing and recovering cell lines, and keep good record for cell line bank.
  • Develop and maintain primary cell culture or organoid from patients and mouse models.
  • In vitro high throughput screening of small molecule : determine and calculation IC50 in 96 or 384 well formats.
  • Functional assay : perform protein, RNA and gDNA extraction from cells and tumor tissue, western blot, confocal microscopy slide preparation, qPCR, genotyping mouse colony.
  • Histology preparation : process fixed tissue, paraffin embedding, and microtome section.
  • In vivo work : basic mouse handling skills such as restraint of various strains of mice, ear tagging of young and adult mice;
  • establish various tumor models such as tumor cell injection by subcutaneous, tail vein, intracardiac; tumor measuring through digital caliper or bioluminescent imaging;
  • therapeutic drug preparation and dosing through different routes such as oral gavage, intraperitoneal, subcutaneous, tail vein, and retro orbital;

perform animal necropsy and tissue / organ collection; maintain genetically modified mouse colony and genotyping; perform surgery on mice such as tumor implantation, tumor resection, and castration.

Required Qualifications*

  • High school diploma or Associate's degree and 1 to 2 years experience for the Intermediate level.
  • High school diploma or Associate's degree and 1 year of experience.
  • Basic cell and molecular biology background.
  • Basic molecular biology experimentation skills.
  • Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills.
  • Excellent documentation skills for research results.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Ability and willingness to learn and implement novel experimental techniques.
  • At least 1 year of wet-laboratory work experience (full / part-time).
  • Willing to have some schedule flexibility and occasionally work on weekends.
  • Ability to function independently as well as a team member in a team setting.
  • Knowledge & understanding of laboratory safety and working hazards.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience in mammalian cell culture, nucleic acid and protein isolation, PCR, qPCR, western blotting.
  • Basic mouse handling skills
  • Animal surgery experience.
  • Strong writing and mathematics skills.
  • Strong troubleshooting ability.
  • Familiar with Microsoft office such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Familiar with GraphPad Prism.
  • Familiar with PubMed or other literature search portals.

Modes of Work
