Position Summary :

The Dean Rusk International Law Center at the University of Georgia School of Law seeks a self-initiating, globally minded individual for the position of Associate Director of Dean Rusk International Law Center.

The Center, which is named after the former U.S. Secretary of State who taught at Georgia Law in the last decades of his career, has served since 1977 as a nucleus for global research, education, and service.

Under the supervision of the Director of the Dean Rusk International Law Center, the Associate Director of Dean Rusk International Law Center, will advance the Center’s mission by developing and administering the initiatives detailed in the responsibility / duty section of this notice.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and / or Competencies :

  • Demonstrated experience or interest in global legal education and international law
  • Self-initiating, entrepreneurial, creative, and collaborative approach to work, and dedication to advancing the mission, described above, of the Dean Rusk International Law Center

Duties / Responsibilities :

Global Externships Overseas (GEO) and At-Home (GEA)

Global Externships include summer and semester-long placements in diverse types of legal practice around the world, both within and outside the United States.

  • Oversee the Global Externships initiative.
  • Recruitment and advising of students interested in these externships.
  • Management of student’s applications.
  • Working with the Director to match students with externship placements.
  • Communication with and stewardship of ongoing relationships with on-campus partners and off-campus placements, the cultivation of new placements, pre-departure preparations, monitoring of placements (and, as needed, risk management assistance) while students are abroad, and ongoing evaluation of the initiative.

Academic-year programming and support

Each academic year, the Center, in coordination with Center stakeholders (including the Center’s Faculty Co-Directors and other law school faculty, student journals, and student organizations), puts together globally themed lectures, colloquia, and conferences which are held at the law school.

  • Oversee the conception, planning, and implementation of these events.
  • Researching and proposing emerging topics and speakers in international law, as well as supporting proposals with the Center’s stakeholders.
  • Coordinating logistical support.
  • Managing online and in-person publicity and promotion of events.
  • Working with on-campus and off-campus partners.
  • Working with speakers and guests during their time on campus.
  • Handling the finances and reimbursement processes in accordance with university systems and procedures.

International training support

The Center hosts trainings for judges, prosecutors, and court personnel from diverse countries.

  • Contribute to the conceptualization and development of proposals for international judicial and legal trainings each year.
  • Identifying and applying for external funding sources, coordinating logistical support.
  • Working with on-campus and off-campus partners.
  • Working with speakers and guests during their time on campus.
  • Handling the finances and reimbursement processes in accordance with university systems and procedures.

International professional development

The Center supports students pursuing professional development in international law.

  • Administer several internal and external professional development stipends (including the Louis B. Sohn Professional Development Scholarship and the Justice John Paul Stevens Public Interest Fellowship).
  • Advertising these opportunities, application management, and coordinating with the appropriate offices to ensure award disbursement.
  • Serve as the point of contact for students interested in benefitting from the law school’s academic partnerships with various professional groups (such as the American Branch of the International Law Association, the American Society of International Law, and Global Atlanta), and will regularly communicate professional development and scholarship opportunities in international law to all students.
  • Serve as the point-person for handling Curricular Practical Training requests for international J.D. students.

Research initiatives

  • Assist the Director of the Center (and, as appropriate, other Center stakeholders) with research projects.
  • Identifying and applying for external funding for research projects and coordinating student workers contributing to the research.
  • Contribute to the research, provide editorial support, and otherwise assist with the publication process.
  • Responsible for any launch events associated with publication.
