Imaging and Sensing Incubation has a growing team that develops ideas and design solutions for user experience and new technologies for Apple products, including the iPhone, iPad, Apple watch, MacBooks, and more.

Our team plays a key role in creating ideas and mechanical hardware for early systems that integrate new technology for demo, experience development, data collection and feature development.

Apple's Incubation team is seeking an experienced firmware engineer to breathe life into high performance custom hardware systems that are essential to delivering future products & features to Apple's Customers.

This role offers a unique opportunity to impact Apple's current and future product lines by delivering firmware and software that enables multi-functional teams to explore and develop computer vision, depth, imaging sensors, and system architectures.

Description

  • Firmware scoping, requirements definition, and architecture development
  • Negotiate requirements with multi-functional partners such as image signal processing, algorithms, or application teams
  • Partner with software, electrical, and system leads to define test requirements and plans
  • Document and present agreed upon firmware architecture to cross-functional partners and leadership
  • Coordinate work you're doing & dependencies with software partners to align with dynamic project goals
  • Collaborate with hardware teams on component selection and implementation details
  • Driver development for sensors and other peripherals on linux, iOS, or macOS based system
  • Design and implement firmware for both custom and 3rd party systems including optical, motion, and depth sensors
  • Coordinate and deliver APIs for automated test interfaces
  • Assist in bring-up, debug, test, calibration, and verification plans to ensure high quality systems are delivered
  • Coordinating multi-functional design & development, small- to medium-scale production, test & calibration, and support through the full system lifecycle

Minimum Qualifications

  • Proven track record of developing embedded systems and hardware from concept to production
  • Strong C, C++, Python programming design skills
  • Ability to read and understand data sheets, schematics, and PCB layouts
  • Experience working with hardware, interfacing with drivers and low-level code
  • Ability to quickly pick up and own new concepts, rapid prototyping and to contribute with innovative solutions
  • Excellent debugging, optimization, problem solving, hands-on experience with HW test equipment
  • Team player with excellent conversational and written communication, negotiation and presentation skills
  • Familiarity with Microchip, ARM, RISC-V, STMicro, Microblaze, FPGA (Xilinx, Lattice) architecture

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with Swift, Xcode, macOS, RTOS development is a plus

Education & Experience

MS with 5+ years or BS with 7+ in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or equivalent industry experience

Pay & Benefits

At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role.

The base pay range for this role is between $166,600 and $250,600, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.

Apple employees also have the opportunity to become an Apple shareholder through participation in Apple's discretionary employee stock programs.

Apple employees are eligible for discretionary restricted stock unit awards, and can purchase Apple stock at a discount if voluntarily participating in Apple's Employee Stock Purchase Plan.

You'll also receive benefits including : Comprehensive medical and dental coverage, retirement benefits, a range of discounted products and free services, and for formal education related to advancing your career at Apple, reimbursement for certain educational expenses - including tuition.
