Description
The Georgia Coalition for Higher Education In Prison (GACHEP) serves incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people seeking higher education in Georgia.
We partner with colleges, universities, and nonprofits to expand postsecondary educational opportunities and support people on their educational journey.
Position : Academic Coordinator (AC) GACHEP
We are seeking a dynamic Academic Coordinator (AC) to join our team. The AC plays a pivotal role in delivering high-quality reentry and educational services to individuals preparing to leave Georgia jails and state prisons, and those seeking support post-release.
The AC will collaborate with GACHEP partner programs to support students in their educational journey. The position will combine direct services to students with technical assistance to college and university partners.
The AC will provide workshops and information to incarcerated students on accessing higher education pre- and post-release and will facilitate seamless transitions to enable students to continue and complete educational goals when they come home.
The AC will support and recruit schools to create higher education in prison programs, providing tailored support. The AC will specialize in navigating regulations for incarcerated students in order to guide colleges through the process of compliance and implementation.
Finally, the AC will be responsible for data tracking and compliance reporting. This is a multi-faceted role that demands collaboration with internal teams and various stakeholders and a commitment to student success.
The AC will regularly enter prison facilities and work closely with post-secondary institutions, the Department of Corrections, and GACHEP’s Operations Administrator to ensure programmatic success.
This will be a full-time Hybrid position, 3-4 days a week in-office. A set work schedule will be determined by the Academic Coordinator in conversation with the GACHEP’s Operations Administrator.
Hours may include evenings and / or weekend time slots, not to exceed (40) forty hours per week. Significant, regular travel across the state will be required.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Workshops on Higher Education : Design and deliver introductory workshops to groups of incarcerated students on pursuing higher education pre- and post-release, including regulations around higher education in prison.
- Pre-to-Post-Release Student Coaching & Mentorship : Work with Reentry Ambassadors to provide guidance and develop personalized education plans with incarcerated students, assisting students with understanding college admissions, navigating Pell applications, and pursuing post-release educational opportunities.
- Work with Colleges on Navigating Regulations : Guide partner post-secondary institutions in understanding and adhering to regulations for incarcerated students, providing support to schools at various stages of becoming higher education in prison providers.
- Identify and Engage Schools : Identify and assist schools with the process of becoming prison education providers.
- Academic Record Maintenance : Maintain student academic records and ensure compliance with FERPA.
- Outcome Tracking & Reporting : Collect data on student success, report to the executive team, and ensure compliance with grant reporting standards.
Performs other duties as assigned / requested.
QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred. J.D. graduates are encouraged to apply.
- Minimum of two years of direct care experience in an individual or group setting.
- Exceptional case management and group facilitation skills.
- Experience with correctional facilities and reentry settings preferred.
- Experience understanding and interpreting federal and local regulations is preferred.
- Ability and willingness to travel one or more hours to prison facilities at least two and up to four times per week.
