Purpose
This position exists in order to increase productivity, improve product quality, improve safety, and increase profitability of the alloy steel business.
The primary focus of this position is to specify requirements and provide a technical and economic evaluation of manufacturing equipment for potential use by the steel business.
This position applies a wide variety of disciplines to complete projects including engineering, project management, cost management, contracts, procurement, negotiations, time and schedule management, management presentations and team building.
This position also helps develop less experienced engineers and acts as a mentor. The engineer will lead and manage electrical engineering projects from conceptualization to full installation - developing plans, budgets, writing AR's, directing outside engineering and coordinating internal engineering and support personnel, developing construction schedules, purchasing equipment, training operators and maintainers, debugging equipment in order to support steel manufacturing operations continuous improvement efforts.
The engineer also conducts feasibility studies and engineering analyses including failure analyses, prepares appropriation requests, directs outside engineering work, develops project schedules, controls spending, creates specifications, manages field construction, and ensures accurate documentation.
Responsibilities
- Increase plant productivity by implement continuous improvement plans of the plants.
- Improve product quality by meeting customer (internal / external) expectations. Establish and maintain standards of quality to ensure project effectiveness.
- Provide a technical, economic, and risk assessment of ideas and projects and then define project objectives and the activities and resources needed for their achievement.
- Independently be able to make decisions on engineering problems and methodology which require a broad, comprehensive knowledge of equipment and practices and uses sound judgement and creative imagination.
- Lead and manage projects to meet the desired goal in set time frame and within budget. Projects range in value from a few thousand to 50M.
Complexities include what is described above plus fundamental under-standing of the electrical engineering principals involved in a process to evaluate the ability of equipment and process to meet customer expectations, writing specifications for the purchase of equipment, guiding equipment engineering, procuring or performing the installation engineering, writing installation specifications, selection of installation contractors, assuring compliance with all OSHA safety regulations in the design and installation of equipment, basic understanding of hydraulics, pneumatics, piping, civil, electrical components, sensors, process control, ergonomics, work flow and building principles for a complete facility.
- Improve equipment reliability including failure analysis, PLC programming capabilities to design, trouble shoot and startup equipment.
- Manage costs and quality of outside engineering firms, contractors and TimkenSteel maintenance associates related to the project.
- Optimal levels of internal and external communications.
- Establish and maintain standards of quality to ensure project effectiveness.
- Develop and maintain knowledge on theories and practices relating to engineering and manufacturing practices.
- Provide technical and engineering support to the steel plants and assist in developing continuous improvement projects and reliability tactics.
- Develop, propose, and implement new process / technology not already in use in our steelmaking plants.
- Lead initiatives to facilitate updates of standards and procedures related to electrical safety, maintenance, and design.
Technical Skills
- Supervising internal engineers and outside engineering firms.
- Directing contractors, writing equipment and installation specifications, and equipment troubleshooting.
- Managing strategic projects with cross functional teams.
- Leading, developing, and rolling out new initiatives related to electrical and project management techniques.
- Self-directing of projects and process improvements.
- Help train and develop new engineers.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor Degree in Engineering with 7 years of experience in equipment design, project management, and / or personnel management.
- Masters Degree in Engineering or Business with 5 years of experience in equipment design, project management, and / or personnel management.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor Degree in Engineering with 12 years of experience in equipment design, project management, and / or personnel management.
- Masters Degree in Engineering or Business with 10 years of experience in equipment design, project management, and / or personnel management.
