The Western Lake Superior Sanitary District (WLSSD) is committed to preventing pollution and protecting the environment, including the region's most precious resource - Lake Superior.
WLSSD treats all municipal and industrial sewage in the Duluth-Cloquet area. Founded as a special purpose unit of government created by the Minnesota Legislature in 1971 to address serious environmental pollution problems in the lower St.
Louis River Basin, WLSSD provides wastewater and solid waste services and oversight for a 530 square mile region around Duluth, Minnesota.
What it's like to be a Environmental Services Manager at WLSSD
As the Environmental Services Manager at Western Lake Superior Sanitary District, you will lead efforts to ensure that the District adheres to federal, state, and local environmental regulations across water, air, solid waste, and biosolids sectors.
You will leverage your expertise to provide guidance and knowledge, track compliance, and lead pollution prevention initiatives.
In this management role, you will direct the training and development of environmental services and laboratory staff while also overseeing performance management.
Collaborating with the District leadership team, you will advise on environmental standards and initiatives, ensuring that the District not only meets compliance requirements but also sets a benchmark for excellence in environmental stewardship.

Would you be a great Environmental Services Manager?
In order to thrive as the Environmental Services Manager at WLSSD, you should possess a strong knowledge of environmental regulations governing wastewater, biosolids land application, storm water, air quality, industrial pretreatment, solid waste, hazardous waste and related programs.
Ideally you have experience developing and implementing a comprehensive environmental compliance program, including NPDES permit compliance.
The ideal candidate should :
- Possess a bachelor's degree (B.S.) from an accredited college or university with a major in chemical engineering, environmental engineering, chemistry, biology, environmental science, environmental studies or related field, and four years of progressively responsible experience in environmental compliance, laboratory management, engineering, or wastewater operations and support
- Possess three years of experience working with regulatory personnel or working on regulatory issues
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered
- Supervisory experience is preferred
