Opportunity DC - Organizing and Communications Coordinator

Location : Washington, DC

Reports to : Executive Director

Office Expectations : In-person, with travel within the District of Columbia

Job Overview :

The Organizing and Communications Coordinator will be the main point of contact for Opportunity

DC’s engagement in the community. You will be responsible for identifying and supporting potential

candidates for office, building relationships with civic leaders and policymakers, and developing the

advocacy skills of business leaders within the District of Columbia. You will engage and support local

leaders through one-on-one meetings, workshops and networking events, and digital forums (e.g.

email, texting, and social media), and you will lead the organization’s external communications.

Key Responsibilities :

Identify, train, and mobilize small business and community leaders :

Conduct research and outreach to identify potential small business leaders within the

community that are representative of the various DC neighborhoods and

constituencies.

Lead programs to help educate local leaders on the policies that help create a thriving

business climate and a strong economy.

Mobilize small business and community leaders to participate in community initiatives,

events, and advocacy campaigns.

Recruit and develop candidates for office, and provide ongoing support for

policymakers :

Identify and coach individuals with potential for leadership roles in the community.

Organize workshops and events to develop the skills and political acumen of potential

candidates for office.

Recruit qualified individuals to run for office in the District, building a diverse,

representative, and inclusive pipeline of candidates.

Build a strong community of future and current candidates and elected officials, through

resource and knowledge-sharing, networking events, and mentoring opportunities.

Lead organizational communications and digital media engagement :

Leverage digital tools social media, texting, newsletters, digital advocacy

campaigns to build and mobilize a strong network of voters, volunteers, and

community leaders committed to building a strong economy capable of supporting the

social good in the District.

Lead the drafting and production of written materials, including press releases,

newsletters, and donor updates.

Educate policymakers on relevant research, in collaboration with local think tanks. Draft

and share fact sheets, briefing materials, and talking points as needed.

Qualifications :

Passion for Opportunity DC’s mission and vision

Proven experience in community organizing, political campaigning, or grassroots activism

Ability to work effectively with diverse communities and stakeholders

Exceptional written and verbal communication skills

Experience delivering high-quality trainings and workshops; exceptional event planning and

execution skills

Strong understanding of local governance structures

Experience with organizing tools and software is preferred

Ability to work a schedule that includes occasional weekend and evening events

Ability to travel within the District of Columbia for in-person meetings and events

Compensation :

Salaries for this role typically fall between $50,000 and $70,000 commensurate with relevant

experience and qualifications. A comprehensive benefits package is included.
