The Mississippi Conference of The United Methodist Church (MSUMC) is excited to announce a search for a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to oversee all aspects of the MSUMC Human Resources, Treasury, and Benefit areas.

The CFO is responsible for the management and accounting of Conference funds, pensions and benefits plans, property and casualty insurance program, coordination of bid procedures and purchasing of supplies and equipment, office administration, and the maintenance of conference owned buildings and other assets.

The CFO will communicate regularly with local churches, district superintendents, and conference committees on financial and general business matters and will be a major participant in financial, strategic, and conference wide planning activities.

This position will be accountable to the Council on Finance and Administration (CF&A), and serves as an ex-officio member, without vote, on the Leadership Council, the Board of Pensions, the Board of Medical Benefits, and Treasurer of the Conference Trustees.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Implements policies and practices for cash management, financial record keeping, financial reporting, internal financial controls, accounting functions and other central treasury functions.
  • Interprets financial statements for all the various agencies and groups within the Conference.
  • Acts as key coordinator and assistant to the budget committee of CF&A in the preparation of the Conference budget.
  • Develops and manages the conference database, financial and accounting systems.
  • Reviews and recommends investments of conference assets.
  • Advocates for and interprets apportionments for districts and local churches.
  • Interfaces with the external auditors for the Conference.
  • Manages the church loan program records, including corresponding with borrowers, creating statements, and providing communication to the committee.
  • Manages finance office staff and infrastructure.
  • Provides staff support to the Conference Board of Trustees, Board of Pensions, and Conference Committee on Personnel, Equitable Compensation and other Boards and Agencies, as required.

Securing through an actuary the annual statement of value for retirement benefits and participate in the audit of the Conference.

  • Responsible for projects and tasks as assigned by the Conference Council on Finance and Administrative.
  • Oversee and administer Conference benefits programs to provide insurance coverage and pension benefits for Conference staff, local church appointed clergy, and retirees.
  • Work alongside benefit vendors and brokers to assure proper administration of Conference programs, resolve issues between vendors and participants, and assure accuracy of billing matters.
  • Work with vendors and Third-Party Administrators to understand trends and patterns necessary to promote and support the Conference’s strategic initiatives and comply with budgetary requirements.
  • Responsible for coordinating benefits processing for enrollments, terminations, and changes.
  • Responsible for coordinating open enrollment, education, and training events.
  • Responsible for completing timely data entry of changes in employment to the benefits system.
  • Staying abreast of compliance issues as pertains to the Affordable Care Act and other applicable laws. Aiding local churches in their understanding and compliance with such laws.
  • Coordinates custodial and grounds keeping requirements at the Conference Office buildings.
  • Prepare and process payroll for all employees of the conference.

Qualifications :

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting / finance is required. CPA or advanced degree is preferred.
  • 10 years’ experience in accounting / finance is required, preferably with a non-profit organization.
  • Minimum (7) years of supervisory accounting experience.
  • High level of proficiency with MS Office products including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience in financial reporting, financial statements, and audits (non-profit and fund accounting preferred).
  • Experience in accounting, investments, electronic data processing, public relations, and management.
  • Knowledge in personnel management, purchasing, pensions and insurance, and maintenance of property.
  • Ability to organize and manage multiple priorities and projects.
  • Strong verbal, written communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
  • A deep knowledge of, and commitment to, the United Methodist Church and how it functions at the local church, district, conference and general church levels is especially essential.

Must be a member of The United Methodist Church.

Compensation :

This full time, exempt position has a salary range of $135,000 (commensurate with experience) and receives full health and pension benefits.

This position is based in Jackson, MS. Our office is open and fully staffed; the position is not remote or hybrid.
