John Asdell with Robert Half is partnered with a private equity backed private company in the construction industry seeking a Controller.
The Controller will oversee the accounting and finance operations for multiple entities in San Diego County. This is a newly created position that is become available due to increased M& A activity on the West Coast.
The Controller will be responsible for managing financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and analysis, ensuring adherence to regulatory requirements and best practices.
Most critically, the Controller will be directly responsible for WIP reporting and Percent Complete calculations. Working closely with the executive leadership team, project managers, and accounting staff, you will provide strategic insights and actionable recommendations to optimize financial performance and support the company's growth objectives.
Key Responsibilities :
Financial Reporting :
- Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for the construction divisions.
- Ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with GAAP and company policies.
- Provide variance analysis and explanations to identify trends, opportunities, and risks.
Budgeting and Forecasting :
- Lead the annual budgeting process for construction projects, collaborating with project managers and department heads.
- Develop detailed financial forecasts and projections to support decision-making and resource allocation.
- Monitor performance against budgets and forecasts, identifying areas for improvement and cost-saving opportunities.
Cost Management :
- Establish and maintain job cost accounting processes to accurately track project expenses, including materials, labor, and overhead.
- Analyze project costs, identify cost drivers, and implement strategies to optimize profitability and efficiency.
- Review and approve project budgets, change orders, and contract modifications to ensure financial viability and alignment with strategic objectives.
Cash Flow Management :
- Manage cash flow forecasting and liquidity planning for construction projects, anticipating funding requirements and mitigating cash flow risks.
- Monitor accounts receivable and accounts payable processes to optimize working capital and minimize delinquencies.
Compliance and Risk Management :
- Ensure compliance with all relevant regulatory requirements, including tax filings, insurance, and licensing.
- Implement and maintain internal controls to safeguard company assets and mitigate financial risks.
- Coordinate with external auditors and regulatory agencies as needed.
Strategic Planning and Analysis :
- Provide financial insights and strategic recommendations to support decision-making and drive operational excellence.
- Evaluate investment opportunities, capital expenditures, and strategic initiatives, conducting financial analysis and ROI assessments.
- Collaborate with executive leadership to develop long-term financial plans and strategic goals for the construction division.
