This position is ECB status requires a minimum number of worked hours per month as needed by the department; limited benefit offerings.

Job Summary : Delivers ionizing radiation treatments to patients as prescribed by the Radiation Oncologists. Is responsible for the technical aspects of radiation therapy, placing emphasis on accuracy, treatment, radiation safety, simulation, simple dosimetry and patient care.

The patient caseload includes inpatient and outpatient care ranging in age from pediatric to geriatric age groups.

Minimum Education : Completion of an accredited Radiation Therapy program.

Licensure, Registration and / or Certification : ARRT certified from the JRCERT (Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology) or CAHEA (Committee on Allied Health Education Accreditation).

Work Experience : 0 - 6 months related experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities : Able to handle interdepartmental relationships. Ability to handle physician special needs requests and meet deadlines for completion.

Must have the ability to deal with cancer survivors and their families. Must be able to perform basic calculation functions.

Must be able to remember general and specific instructions and job requirements.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities : Patient Care / Communication : provides kind, compassionate and safe care to patients as well as consideration and understanding for families and co-workers.

The Radiation Therapist will demonstrate skilled performance in emergencies and a rapid grasp of problem-saving. Explains procedure to the patient as a means of communication during the treatment and the procedure to follow if an emergency arises during the treatment.

It is the responsibility of the radiation therapist to continually assess the immediate needs and conditions of assigned patients.

Communicates to patients and their families pertinent information relating to routine treatment during the course of radiation therapy treatments (i.

e. appointments, skin care, treatment effects, proper attire, etc.). Work Role Competency : demonstrates a thorough understanding of the therapeutic equipment and its function (including all supplementary appliances, wedge filters, beam blocks, treatment devices, etc.

and the ability to use these items to their full potential with a keen appreciation of the result of misuse or omission of prescribed or essential devices during a course of treatment).

Responsible for ensuring that all treatment parameters have been verified and the patient set-up is accurate prior to giving the patient the initial and subsequent radiation therapy treatments.

Demonstrates ability to decipher clinical information from the initial and weekly verification films taken in the linear accelerator treatment room.

Recognizes the first signs of complication or other adverse development and knows when to withhold treatment until the physician is consulted.

Demonstrates a thorough understanding of the physician's prescriptions and treatment plan. Treatment Delivery : Delivers accurately the prescribed planned course of radiation therapy with minimal supervision.

Treatment chart documentation : responsible for keeping accurate documentation regarding the technical details of the treatment administered to each patient undergoing radiation therapy.

Demonstrates a thorough understanding of the simulator's functions and operations as well as possessing expertise in the simulator's techniques.

Demonstrates ability to decipher clinical information from the simulation films. Demonstrates a thorough understanding in the area of custom block making as well as construction of immobilization devices and mold-making techniques.

Quality assurance / daily warm-up procedures : performs daily warm-up procedures on a rotating basis via the departmental staffing matrix.

Notifies proper personnel of equipment malfunctions and / or adverse conditions. Daily checks which are performed on the linear accelerator and simulator and proper logging procedures.

Participation in carrying out various aspects of quality assurance. May include maintenance of appropriate logs and visual inspection for defects (i.

e. treatment accessories, communication devices, machine panel reading, indicator lights, block room accessories, etc.). Reports erratic operation of equipment to the Clinical Manager, the Physicist, and / or the Radiation Oncologist as well as documenting the problem in the correct log book.

Clinical management duties : Submits accurate daily patient treatment charges, and maintains daily scheduling for appropriate machine.

Shows proper time utilization by organizing workload and avoiding personal diversions. Actively seeks methods for cost-containment.

Actively participates in on-going departmental functions. Demonstrates compliance with infection control guidelines and hospital safety management program (including proper use of personal protective equipment).

Departmental workload / accountability : interacts with peers, staff members, patients, and visitors in a professional and diplomatic manner.

Communicates with other technical staff changes or modifications in individual treatment setups (separations, boost, MU variances and other treatment chart changes).

Exhibits a willingness to assist other staff members in their duties to ensure that the overall patient schedule is maintained.

This will include assisting with the workload at the Radiation Oncology Control Desk area as well (answering phones, scheduling appointments, putting patient charts together, other clerical duties).

Is supportive of the departmental staffing matrix and his / her responsibility to rotate accordingly at the appropriate time.

Overall departmental cross-training is a top priority for all staff members.

Decision Making : Independent judgment in planning sequence of operations and making minor decisions in a complex technical or professional field.

Working Relationships : Works directly with patients and / or customers. Works with internal customers via telephone or face to face interaction.
