Archivist II, LM006, Full-time 100%, Academic Staff, 12-month appointment Ongoing / Renewable, one vacancy

POSITION SUMMARY :

The CLIC@JDHL is a busy, multi-faceted, 13-person unit committed to supporting the UW-Superior mission in its provision of community, resources, and support for students, staff, and the community.

As a staff, the unit prioritizes community-building, professional development, and collaboration. This position provides a wide variety of advanced archival services in collection development, creation, and appraisal of collection materials in a variety of formats, arrangement and description, preservation, reference and research support, and outreach and instruction in support of historical documentation, education, and research.

Provides input on policies and procedures, typically through committee work, to contribute to services and operations and assist in continual service improvement and innovation.

Solves complex problems based on advanced knowledge and expertise. Initiates process improvements, policy changes, and new initiatives, typically through committee work, to contribute towards continual improvement in services and operations.

Provides reference and outreach services to students online and face-to-face; provides library instruction; serves as a liaison to one or more academic departments;

is responsible for monitoring and implementing best practices and trends.

UW-STANDARD JOB DESCRIPTION DUTIES :

  • Appraises, acquires, creates, and processes primary sources to make them discoverable based on established guidelines and policies.
  • Authenticates historical documents and archival materials and researches their significance as it relates to collection appraisal and research.
  • Develops and leads archives instructional initiatives and integrates archival collections into course assignments and curriculum.

Assists patrons with reference and research; may teach courses.

  • Develops policies, procedures, and assessment tools to improve user experience and workflows.
  • Collaborates with vendors, technology communities, and internal & UW System technical support staff to manage the implementation and use of archival software tools to maximize workflow efficiency and contribute to national archives technology efforts.
  • Cultivates and stewards relationships with donors, collectors, faculty, alumni, students, and community partners.
  • Fosters relationships with professional colleagues and participates in professional development and scholarly activities within the field.
  • Identifies and evaluates preservation needs of items and determines preservation solutions including digitization.
  • May direct the day-to-day activities of student workers.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES SPECIFIC TO POSITION :

  • Administer and maintain the university s unique collections relevant to the local and regional history and needs as well as primary university records, both historic and current in line with UW-System records management policies and processes.
  • Conduct outreach and promotion of collections through communication such as guides, indexes, LibGuides, displays, webpages, finding aides, and other types of training and outreach for the improvement of community and student use and learning of the archives.
  • Provides specialized services utilizing a high level of expertise on a broad range of disciplines or in a designated discipline area.
  • Provide reproduction services such as photocopying, permissions for images, scanning and printing for patrons.
  • Serves as a liaison to academic disciplines and / or other campus units providing information on collections, instructional and research support, and library services.
  • Serve on UW-System Archives Council (UWSAC) and cooperate with agencies on local and regional levels as needed including serving as area research center (ARC) contact for state of Wisconsin Historical Society and other ARCs in the state.
  • Engage in ongoing scholarship and professional development by conducting research, publishing findings in relevant publications or conferences, participating in professional organizations, attending conferences, and completing continuing education opportunities to stay current with archival practices and advancements in the field of librarianship.
  • Facilitate and support undergraduate research, scholarly and creative activities (URSCA), academic service-learning (ASL), and internship programs by mentoring students, providing access to archival materials, coordinating projects, and collaborating with faculty to integrate archival resources into curriculum and experiential learning opportunities.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES :

  • Ability to work collaboratively and transparently across units to achieve goals
  • Ability to prepare and present reports and statistics
  • Experience or course work on preservation and digitization of records
  • Ability to work flexibly and creatively in rapidly changing environment
  • Ability to work effectively with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds
  • Knowledge of genealogical research

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS INCLUDE :

  • American Library Association (ALA) accredited master's degree in library science (MLS) with archival concentration or significant education in archives
  • 3+ years of experience in an archive serving the public
  • Experience in an academic library or supporting college students and / or faculty and staff with reference and / or instruction

This position is currently ineligible for H1-B sponsorship. A qualification for this position includes independent eligibility to work within the United States upon hire date.
