And it's why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it's worth paying for. Job Description The Graphics department of The New York Times is looking for a strong reporter and cartographic specialist who can develop lines of reporting, gather and analyze geospatial data.

You will design maps and other geographic visualizations and work with fellow designers, reporters and editors to create visual stories for breaking news and enterprise subjects on all platforms.

You will pursue original reporting and will be expected to exercise journalistic and visual judgment to ensure the accuracy and clarity of your work.

The Graphics department is a group of journalists and visual thinkers with creative backgrounds ranging from architecture to cartography to computer science.

As journalists, we are curious about all kinds of subjects and seek to find collaborative partners who bring their own curiosity to bear in creative approaches to reporting and storytelling.

This position reports to the senior editor for geography. This is a hybrid position based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance.

Responsibilities : Report and gather data to create geographic visualizations Build and design maps using a variety of tools, including Adobe Illustrator Respond quickly to breaking news Collaborate on visual stories across platforms Integrate a range of reporting and storytelling forms and disciplines like geospatial analysis, cartography, remote sensing, photogrammetry, video and animation Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Basic Qualifications : At least 3 years of relevant professional experience Expertise in cartography, GIS, earth observation and image analysis Familiarity with web development, including Javascript, HTML and CSS.

Strong visual and interactive design skills with a clear grasp of typography, layout, color, motion and user behavior. Preferred Qualifications : Experience and willingness to quickly execute and publish maps for breaking news coverage Capacity to meet deadlines and to adapt to change in a daily, unpredictable news production environment Experience working collaboratively with members of a multidisciplinary team This position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY.
