Position Overview
The Director, Compensation is responsible for the overall strategy, design, implementation, management, and administration of Butler’s compensation programs.
The Director ensures that all programs are competitive and compliant and support the university’s strategic objectives and ensures policies are up-to-date and procedures and processes are streamlined and efficient.
The Director will be a strong advocate and keeper of company culture; will be responsible for building a strategy to strengthen the overall recruitment, diversity, and retention strategies to attract, retain and engage a high performing workforce.
The Director must represent the company mission and values in their strategic initiatives. This role will predominantly be based on campus, fostering direct interaction and collaboration within the university community.
No relocation assistance is provided for this position.
Responsibilities
Leads the compensation function for the university. Establishes the strategic direction, sets goals, and leads projects for the function.
Core compensation functions include base pay administration for staff employees, evaluation of market trends, executive compensation, salary planning, updates of policies and procedures, and compliance with local and federal laws.
Coaches, counsels, and assists managers and others in understanding and applying compensation theory and practice, operating within the university guidelines.
Serves as an internal expert to the VP & CHRO on compensation matters. Provides training to managers, leaders, and others, when needed.
Leads compensation-related projects such as the development of total compensation statements, pay equity analysis, and compensation-related audits.
Provides leadership to a compensation manager.
- Reviews and stays on-top of employment laws and changes.
- Reviews business processes and identifies areas of improvement. Develops and designs new or revised processes, procedures, and tools, when needed, to ensure efficiency and streamlining of operations.
- Collaborates with other areas and leaders across the university to determine their needs and identify opportunities for improvement.
Partners with vendors, consultants, industry experts, and users at other universities to bring forward ideas and implement best practices.
Partners with HRIS manager to leverage technology and implement solutions for administration of critical compensation.
Identifies gaps and needs and develops requirements for technology solutions. Works with technology partners (both internally and externally) to implement improved solutions.
Works on ad-hoc projects, as needed, by the HR department and the university.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in human resources, Business Administration, or related discipline
- 10-15 years of expertise in compensation with duties including but not limited to development of strategy, design, administration, compliance, and support.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in a leadership role managing the work of others
- Advanced reporting proficiency to interpret, analyze and present data.
- Demonstrated knowledge of state, federal and local employment laws, and regulations
- Demonstrated excellence in communication, analytical, organizational, and consultative customer service skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in human resources, Business Administration or related discipline preferred.
- Previous compensation experience in higher education strongly preferred.
- Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) is preferred.
