What Your Job Will Be Like :
We are seeking a R&D S&E, Mechanical Engineer in Department 7545. This department is responsible for the design, development, and qualification of lithium primary and secondary batteries needed to meet demanding performance and reliability requirements.
Our engineers do this by working on interdisciplinary teams to evolve these design concepts and test them to qualify them for use.
We perform this work in accordance with high safety standards in labs at SNL as well as with external suppliers. Our work involves aspects of material science, electrical & mechanical engineering, modeling and simulation, and data analysis of aging studies.
On any given day, you may be called on to :
- Provide support to, or lead, one or more Product Realization Teams (PRTs) involved in designing, modeling, developing, and testing high quality power source products to challenging specifications.
- Support small lot development battery assembly builds for evaluation and testing including identifying / implementing design and process improvements, providing engineering oversight, and technical problem resolution.
- Interface with external suppliers to ensure products are built as intended and evaluating test results.
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.
Salary Range : $109,300 - $217,400

Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require :
- Bachelor’s degree in an engineering or STEM discipline plus 5 years of directly related experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of the job, or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
- Equivalent experience in lieu of degrees must be engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.
Qualifications We Desire :
- Experience working safely around mitigated hazards associated with general laboratory environments.
- Proven experience with designing, fabricating and / or testing of primary or secondary lithium battery assemblies and components.
- Experience in product design, development, fabrication, and qualification of hardware to stringent requirements. Experience within the ND production realization environment is particularly relevant.
- Proven evidence of excellent teaming, interpersonal and written communication, and organizational skills.
- Experience with finite element modeling methods and tools such as COMSOL and / or SOLSTICE.
- Experience using common engineering languages including MATLAB, Python, and / or Java.
- Previous experience in the development and conducting of test plans for hardware including electrical and environmental testing.
- Demonstrated record of technical accomplishments in relevant technical areas.
- Experience working with customers and suppliers negotiating requirements and deliverables.
- Experience leading teams composed of engineers and support personnel with diverse technical skills through product qualification.
- Experience in developing methods, processes, technical work documents and procedures.
