General Job Information
Serves as Creative Arts Therapist (Art) for Saint Elizabeths Hospital. Responsible for planning, developing and implementing art therapy services designed to meet the individually assessed needs of a wide range of psychiatric patients.
Provides professional, recovery-based art therapy services that value and reflect cultural and ethnic diversity. Utilizes creativity, spontaneity, and sensitivity in facilitating work with group movement and group interaction.
Utilizes best treatment practices based on research and analysis which promote recovery, reduces stigma and enhances the quality of life.
Develops and maintains standards of care for art therapy that reflects national standards for best practices. Participates in Rehabilitation-wide performance improvement and competency review;
prepares written reports; and recruits, assigns, supervises and evaluates art therapy trainees.
Qualifications
This position requires 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. Specialized experience is experience that required application of a knowledge of the concepts, principles, and practices of Art Therapy.
Licensures, Certifications and other requirements
Must be registered by the District of Columbia Department of Health, Office of Professional Licensing Registration Programs Administration.
Education Minimum Education Requirements
Applicants must meet one of the following educational requirements :
- Bachelor’s or graduate / higher level degree in art therapy
- Bachelor’s or graduate / higher level degree in a related field involving therapeutic emphasis or concentration that included at least 36 semester hours in therapeutic courses as described below : 18 semester hours of therapeutic recreation courses;
and 18 semester hours that include a combination of abnormal psychology, physiology, human anatomy and development, disabilities and general recreation
Education must have been obtained from an accredited program recognized by the at the time the degree was obtained.
Work Experience
Experience applying therapeutic approaches to maintain the physical and / or mental rehabilitation of Individuals in care with severe and / or persistent mental illness
Work Environment
Work is performed in a controlled environment and involves some exposure to moderate risk of accidents and requires following basic safety precautions.

A person applying for a position in the Career Service, Educational Service, Management Supervisory Service, a line attorney position in the Legal Service (series 905), or an attorney position in the Excepted Service (series 905) who is a bona fide District resident AT THE TIME OF APPLICATION for the position may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points.
If selected, the person shall be required to present proof of bona fide District residency and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment.
