Landscaping Technician
This position is responsible for participating in the installation, care, and maintenance of city landscaping.
Major duties include :
- Maintaining city grounds and landscaping; mowing grass and cutting weeds; edging lawns; blowing leaves; trimming and pruning trees and shrubbery.
- Participating in the installation, operation, and maintenance of irrigation systems; repairing lines as needed.
- Assisting in repairing landscape problems associated with aging landscapes; repairing irrigation system failures and drainage problems; removing overgrown, dying, or diseased plants.
- Assisting in installing hardscape elements such as paving and retaining walls; assisting in installing softscape elements such as plantings and sod.
- Applying pesticides and herbicides; applying spot-treatment and broadcast application of chemicals and fertilizers.
- Operating a variety of equipment, including mowers, weed eaters, blowers, tractors, loaders, trenchers, augers, tillers, etc.
- Operating a variety of hand and power tools.
- Performing related duties.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities required by the position include :
Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of mowers and other grounds maintenance equipment.Knowledge of irrigation system maintenance principles.Knowledge of planting techniques.Knowledge of the tools, equipment, materials, and methods used in the planting, pruning, and maintenance of trees and landscaping.Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety procedures.Skill in the operation of a variety of landscape maintenance tools and equipment.Skill in pulling and backing trailers.Skill in prioritizing and planning.Skill in interpersonal relations.Skill in oral and written communication.The Landscape Manager assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the results.
Guidelines include chemical labels, OSHA regulations, and department and city policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.
The work consists of related technical duties. Equipment malfunctions and inclement weather contribute to the complexity of the position. The purpose of this position is to assist in the maintenance of city landscaping. Successful performance contributes to the provision of an attractive and safe environment for city employees and the public.
Contacts are typically with coworkers, other city personnel, and the public. Contacts are typically to exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
The work is typically performed in outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
Supervisory and management responsibility : None.
Minimum qualifications include :
Graduation from a standard senior high school or GED equivalent as recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE) or Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), andSix (6) months recent experience in grounds maintenance, andSix (6) months experience operating a tractor and / or mower.Possession of current / valid Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) preferred.Necessary special requirements :
