We are looking for a dedicated and detail-driven Assistant Controller to join our finance team in Santa Barbara, California. In this role, you will play a vital part in maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, and supporting the organization’s mission through effective financial management. Responsibilities :
- Prepare and review financial statements on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis, ensuring compliance with nonprofit accounting standards.
- Analyze financial results to provide actionable insights that support organizational strategy and programmatic decision-making.
- Oversee general ledger functions, including journal entries, reconciliations, and month-end and year-end closing processes.
- Manage accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and expense reimbursement functions to ensure accuracy and efficiency.
- Monitor and reconcile restricted and unrestricted net assets, ensuring proper fund allocation and compliance with donor requirements.
- Strengthen internal controls and safeguard organizational assets while maintaining accountability in financial processes.
- Coordinate and prepare for annual financial statement audits, ensuring timely and accurate responses to auditor inquiries.
- Supervise and mentor accounting staff, fostering growth and a collaborative team environment.
- Assist in budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management to support organizational sustainability.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align financial processes with programmatic goals and organizational initiatives.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required.
- A minimum of five years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in the nonprofit sector.
- Proficiency in fund accounting and familiarity with donor reporting and grants management is highly desirable.
- Experience preparing for annual audits and working with external auditors is essential.
- Strong knowledge of internal control frameworks and compliance with nonprofit reporting standards.
- Proficiency in accounting software such as NetSuite, Sage Intacct, or similar platforms.
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel and familiarity with budgeting tools such as Planful are a plus.
- Exceptional attention to detail, analytical abilities, and strong communication skills are critical for success in this role.
