Assistant Project Manager
Location : New London CT
SPS New England, Inc., one of the leading heavy highway contractors in New England, is seeking a highly motivated individual to perform duties on Bridge and Highway construction projects.
Since 1984, SPS has been helping to rebuild New England's infrastructure. Wherever you drive throughout Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire, there's a good chance you will travel down a road or over a bridge built by SPS New England.
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Assistant Project Manager (APM) to support the successful execution of heavy civil construction projects, including but not limited to earthwork, roadways, bridges, utilities, mass excavation, and water infrastructure. The APM will work closely with the Project Manager and field teams to ensure that projects are delivered safely, on time, within budget, and in compliance with all project specifications and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities :
- Assist in the planning, coordination, and execution of heavy civil construction projects from pre-construction through closeout.
- Prepare and manage RFIs, submittals, change orders, meeting minutes, and other project documentation.
- Coordinate with field superintendents, subcontractors, suppliers, and engineers to ensure effective communication and project progress.
- Support the Project Manager in developing and tracking project schedules using tools like P6 or MS Project.
- Monitor and report on project costs, budgets, quantities, and production tracking.
- Assist in maintaining compliance with safety programs, environmental regulations, and quality control plans.
- Participate in weekly project meetings, document discussions, and follow up on action items.
- Manage and organize project documentation using construction management software (e.g., Procore, HCSS, Viewpoint).
- Assist with procurement, including soliciting and evaluating subcontractor / supplier bids and preparing purchase orders.
- Coordinate project closeout including punch list tracking, as-built drawings, and O&M manual submission.
Qualifications :
Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).3 to 5 years of experience in construction project management, ideally in heavy civil or infrastructure projects.Knowledge of construction practices, reading plans / specs, cost controls, and scheduling.Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook); familiarity with construction management software is a plus (Bluebeam REVU, Procore, Primavera "P6", AutoCAD)Strong organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills.Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.OSHA 30-Hour Certification (or willingness to obtain).Valid driver's license and reliable transportation; job site visits required.
