The Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) Engineer provides engineering expertise to ensure the safe and reliable management of SIS at the Lake Charles refinery throughout the ISA / IEC 61511 lifecycle. The SIS Engineer reports to the refinery SIS Engineering Supervisor.
Responsibilities
- Track and analyze SIS performance through a KPI program. Leverage insight from KPIs to identify improvement opportunities for the SIS program.
- Participate in investigations of SIS events including failures, demands, and spurious trips.
- Serve as technical escalation point to support Operations, Maintenance, & Automation departments with troubleshooting SIS-related concerns.
- Support capital project teams as needed to guide the development of SIS design documentation.
- Support PSM by serving as subject matter expert for SIS and instrumentation during HAZOPs and LOPA when needed.
- Review QRA content to verify that functional safety objectives have been met.
- Lead and participate in Functional Safety Assessments (FSAs) for both new and existing SIS.
- As needed, update and / or create SIS documentation including but not limited to Safety Requirements Specification (SRS), SIL calculations, test procedures.
- Support T / A scope development as needed for SIS.
- Serve as subject matter expert for SIS when evaluating management of change (MOC) requests.
- Participate in audits related to SIS, including Mechanical Integrity, PSM, and others as needed.
- Author Engineering Work Requests (EWRs) for larger capital efforts, leveraging justification from risk assessments and company standards.
- Apply instrumentation and SIS expertise to design decisions impacting SIS reliability.
- Work alongside Automation department to ensure that SIS application programs meet the respective SRS requirements.
- Participate on ad hoc inter-departmental teams to support business needs.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in electrical, chemical, or mechanical engineering, or related engineering fieldFive (5) years' experience with industrial process instrumentation engineering including minimum of two (2) years' SIS engineering experienceActive 3rd party ISA / IEC 61511 competency certification from ISA, Exida, or TÜV RheinlandFamiliarity with programmable logic solver (PLC) and distributed control systems (DCS) basic architecture and configuration practicesFamiliarity with risk assessment techniques, including HAZOP, LOPA, and QRAExperience applying instrument engineering concepts to select technology suitable for measurement, control, and shut down applicationsValid Driver's LicenseThe Maritime Transportation Security Act requires all persons who will need unescorted access to a regulated facility to have a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC), issued in accordance with the rules established by the United States Coast Guard and the Transportation Security Administration.
