Overview Collaborative Editor – Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, Los Angeles, California
The USC Annenberg Center for Health Journalism seeks to hire a veteran editor to lead our award-winning non-profit journalism collaborative focused on health and health equity, working with ethnic media news outlets across California. The Collaborative News Editor will create educational programming, serve as project editor, mentor reporters at different skill levels, and lead a learning and reporting effort that involves 5–7 ethnic media outlets in California. As project manager, you will nurture esprit de corps and build a virtual newsroom among reporters, newsroom leaders, and editorial colleagues, brainstorming story ideas, editing copy, and developing a learning curriculum in collaboration with participating newsrooms. You will also track outcomes and contribute to progress reports. Prior stories from the initiative in the past two years reflect its recognition with 14 regional and national awards in its first year.
This is a 40 hour per week, grant-funded, hybrid staff position based in Los Angeles, with a two-day-per-week in-office requirement.
Responsibilities Lead editorial direction for a multi-outlet health journalism collaboration focused on health equity.
Mentor reporters across skill levels and help develop a learning curriculum and program design with participating newsrooms.
Coordinate story ideation, editing, and quality control; manage project timelines and deliverables.
Track outcomes and contribute to reports documenting program progress and impact.
Foster collaboration among reporters, newsroom leaders, and editorial staff; build and sustain a virtual newsroom environment.
Qualifications 3–5 years in an editorial leadership role; demonstrated expertise in reporting and / or editing on social welfare, equity, health, and health policy topics.
Editing and project management experience required.
Bilingual skills are a plus; cross-platform skills are preferred.
Experience in the ethnic media sector and familiarity with the California health policy landscape encouraged.
Creative, enterprising, with strong project management and editing skills; collaborative and able to keep a team on track, handle long-term goals, and respond to breaking news.
Salary, Benefits, and How to Apply Salary range : $87,000–$91,000 per year. USC considers factors such as scope and responsibilities, experience, education / training, key skills, internal equity, laws, grant funding, and external market considerations when offering employment.

About the USC Annenberg Center for Health Journalism The Center defines health broadly to support investigations and explanatory journalism on topics ranging from unequal impacts of urban design to climate change and environmental burden of industry. It offers fellowships and symposia that supported nearly 200 journalists in 2024, with broad outreach through webinars and web content. The Center has a 21-year history of producing journalism in partnership with thousands of journalists and newsrooms, and its reporting has influenced laws and policy.
The Center has hosted news collaboratives for more than a decade and is currently in the second year of its Ethnic Media Collaborative, bringing together eight outlets serving Black, Latino, Chinese, and Vietnamese audiences in California. It provides project and editorial management for its news collaboratives, with dedicated editors and support teams handling distribution and deadlines.
