Overview

We’re seeking an experienced, hands-on Backend Engineer to lead as our Head of Engineering at a venture-backed, early-stage startup building cutting-edge, AI-driven products. As one of the first technical hires, you’ll have significant influence over architectural decisions, team culture, and product direction. This role blends deep technical design with cross-functional leadership.

Uare.ai, founded by Robert LoCascio, is an AI startup focused on creating personal AIs and AI-driven personal digital twins. The company aims to empower people to preserve, share, and interact with knowledge and stories in innovative ways.

At its core is the proprietary Human Life Model (HLM), designed to process unstructured conversations and story data sets without training client data into traditional LLMs. Uare.ai leverages 3rd-party LLMs for conversations, with HLM providing structure and reasoning. The platform has broad B2C and B2B applications and has gained traction with notable media coverage.

About the Role :

Lead design and development of core backend systems and scalable APIs to support AI-powered, real-time user experiences. Partner with ML and frontend teams to deploy AI models in production and drive technical strategy, architecture, and hiring.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the design and development of core backend systems and scalable APIs to support AI-powered, real-time user experiences.
  • Own architecture decisions for backend infrastructure, cloud orchestration, data pipelines, and third-party AI service integration.
  • Collaborate with machine learning engineers and frontend engineers to operationalize AI models in production.
  • Establish and enforce best practices for system reliability, security, and performance.
  • Partner with the founding team on technical strategy, product planning, and hiring.
  • Mentor and guide other engineers as the team scales.

What We’re Looking For

  • 4+ years of experience building cloud-native backend systems for scale.
  • Proven experience leading small teams or acting as a technical decision-maker in early-stage environments.
  • Strong knowledge of modern programming languages (Python, Go, or TypeScript preferred).
  • Experience designing cloud-native systems (AWS, GCP, or Azure), including serverless, containerized, and microservice-based architectures.
  • Deep understanding of secure data handling, authentication, and system scaling.
  • Knowledge of API security, rate-limiting, and data privacy best practices.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate cross-functionally.
  • Excited about building 0-to-1 products in a fast-moving environment.
