The City of La Habra is conducting a recruitment for part-time and / or substitute positions of Teacher Assistant for the Child Development Division, School-Age and Pre-School Programs. The Assistant position, depending on assignment, may be working with school age or preschool age children for up to 8 hours / day, any day of the week, not to exceed 28.5 hours per week. These positions are authorized under State rules and funds, are grant-funded for specific programs, and may be of limited-term (subject to continuation of grant).

We believe each child should receive individual attention, encouragement, support, and guidance. A variety of experiences are provided to develop the child\'s fullest potential, including preparing each child for the next step in their education journey. We have a strong commitment to the community, and involvement has been at the core of developing many social service programs offered through this agency. Full Day and Part Day spaces are available for families who meet eligibility requirements. This full-year program provides care and educational services 12 months a year. We strive to serve all children and continually seek ways to accommodate the unique needs of children with disabilities.
ABOUT THE POSITION
Under the general direction of the Teacher, the Teacher Assistant supports the planning, organizing, and implementation of developmentally appropriate curriculum for children enrolled in the Child Development program. They assist children in activities that promote social / emotional, physical health and safety, and cognitive growth. Under the Teacher\'s guidance, the Teacher Assistant assists with lessons for school-age or preschool-age children; also plans programs and activities in the classroom and outdoors, performing related duties as needed.

Option 1
Applicants must hold a Child Development Assistant Permit or higher.
OR
APPLICANTS WHO DO NOT POSSESS A PERMIT MAY APPLY BY MEETING ONE OF the FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS :
Option 2
Accredited HERO program (including ROP) Completed certificate.
Option 3
Enrolled in 6 college units of Child Development, to obtain the Assistant permit.
Preference : Bilingual in English and Spanish highly desirable.
License Requirement
Pediatric First Aid and Pediatric CPR certification is required (30 days after employment). Must pass California Community Care Licensing fingerprint clearance to work with children.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this class, an employee performs moderately heavy work; regularly required to sit, stand, talk and hear both in person and by telephone; and use hands to operate, finger, handle or feel a variety of equipment; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is required to walk, climb, stoop or bend, kneel, push, and pull frequently. Must be able to lift and carry a small child (up to 50 pounds) as needed / in the event of an emergency. Sitting on the floor and getting up and down to assist children in the classroom. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. Must pass a pre-employment physical including a tuberculosis test and required immunizations (SB792).
MENTAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this class, the employee is regularly required to work on multiple concurrent tasks with constant interruptions, read and interpret documents and information; use oral communication skills; interact with City staff, elected officials, residents, the general public and others encountered in the course of work, some of whom may be dissatisfied and / or abusive individuals.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is typically performed at indoor and outdoor program sites in seasonal weather conditions. Work may require exposure to noise, dust and dirt. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet while in the office, and moderately loud when in the field.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
Public Employee Disaster Service Worker : In accordance with Government Code Section 3100, all La Habra city employees are required to perform assigned disaster service worker duties in the event of an emergency or a disaster.
