Temporary Seasonal Public Work Tech I- Solid Waste
The Town of Holly Springs is seeking temporary Seasonal Public Work Tech I- Solid Waste to assist with the upcoming leaf season. This position is responsible for performing work in collecting and removing yard waste and debris from residential and public streets and outdoor areas. Days and hours M-Fri >
6 : 30am 3 : 00pm Seasonal position with 1000 hours maximum. Hourly rate is $20 / hour.
Reports to the Public Works Supervisor. Works under the general supervision of the Supervisor. Work is checked for accuracy, quality, and adherence to instructions. Employees may need to occasionally choose from defined alternatives to resolve problems but consult with the supervisor on matters not covered by guidelines. Incumbents have no supervisory responsibilities.
Essential functions include driving and operating a refuse collection vehicle with automated trucks to collect residential refuse / recycling / yard waste, collecting yard waste debris from public streets, completing assigned and scheduled routes safely on time and without assistance, driving designated vehicles to a designated disposal site, unloading, and returning directly to route, safely operating assigned equipment, clearing storm drains and maintaining stormwater conveyance infrastructure, applying rock salt / salt brine and performing snow and ice removal from Town streets and sidewalks; snow plowing, performing operator's preventative checks and minor preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment, operating hand-held electronic devices for routing and pre-post trip procedures, reporting maintenance and / or repair needs that require mechanic assistance, completing work orders, daily activity reports, inspection reports, and time sheets; maintaining maintenance and service records / logs, and other pertinent information, responding to customer complaints and / or concerns, advising supervisor(s) of complaints and / or concerns not resolved, responding as essential field personnel in emergency and inclement weather situations, assisting with set-up and clean-up for Town-sponsored festivals, parades, and events, providing backup support and assistance to the department as needed, reporting to work for after-hour needs, as assigned, and other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities include knowledge of safe and proper solid waste handling practices, knowledge of items banned from disposal in landfills, knowledge of what constitutes hazardous waste and yard waste, knowledge of traffic safety principles, working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work, working knowledge of environmental and regulatory requirements related to the work, working knowledge of the traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations about use of tools and motorized equipment, knowledge of legal load limits for assigned equipment and vehicles, ability to operate assigned machinery and equipment skillfully and safely near vehicular traffic, knowledge of the operation, care, and repair of maintenance equipment and tools, working knowledge of occupational hazards (OSHA) and safe work practices including Safety Data Sheets, knowledge of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, skill in organizational and time management to prioritize duties to accomplish a high volume of work products while adapting to constant changes in priority, ability to understand and effectively carry out local policies and procedures; written instructions, general correspondence, and Federal, State, and local regulations, ability to perform detailed work accurately and independently in compliance with stringent time limits with minimal direction and supervision, ability to prepare and maintain accurate and concise records and reports consistent with the position, ability to communicate, concisely, and effectively in English with staff, administration, and the public in both written and verbal form, ability to adapt and take control of situations, responsibly dictating subordinate activities, ability to instruct and train in methods and procedures, ability to organize, assign, and modify the work assignment of others, and (re)-establish priorities to meet deadlines, ability to define problems, exercise sound judgment, and address a variety of situations, ability to think quickly, maintain self-control, and adapt to stressful situations, ability to maintain professionalism at all times, ability to work as a member of a team, ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others, and ability to perform mathematical calculations required of this position.
Physical and work environment characteristics include occasional exertion of up to 75 pounds of force, strenuous manual labor, walking or standing on rough terrain, sitting for long periods, work above or below ground, standard vision requirements, vocal communication, hearing requirements, exposure to hazardous chemicals / pesticides, and exposure to inclement weather.
Minimum required qualifications include a high school diploma or equivalent, previous experience in public works, construction, or solid waste preferred, and a valid Class B CDL Driver's license minimum.
