The Role
We're looking for a Social Media Manager to grow and engage our global Linux and open source community- across
three social media brands : System76, Pop!_OS, and COSMIC . This role combines savvy social media strategy, content creation, and community engagement to build meaningful relationships with our audience and amplify the System76 mission. You'll be the digital voice of System76-where authenticity, transparency, and geeky enthusiasm are highly encouraged.
Responsibilities
Community Engagement
Foster a welcoming, respectful environment across social platforms, forums, and live chats.
Monitor and respond to customer questions, feature feedback, and support escalations.
Cultivate relationships with community influencers, contributors, and Linux enthusiasts.
Social Media Management
Plan and execute social media content across platforms (X / Twitter, Mastodon, YouTube, Instagram, Reddit, System76 Discord and Mattermost, etc.)-for System76, Pop!_OS, and COSMIC
Create compelling posts that showcase product launches, product features, development updates, behind-the-scenes stories, and memes.
Highlight community contributors and their projects
Stay current on evolving best practices, trends, and algorithm shifts.
Track metrics and adjust strategies based on engagement, sentiment, and reach.
Content & Campaigns
Collaborate with design, product, and engineering teams to translate technical ideas into approachable content.
Stay constantly aware of product teams activity
Launch and manage creative campaigns to support major events, product launches, and open-source initiatives.
Record, edit, or coordinate video and photo content from internal or community sources.
Advocacy & Feedback
Serve as the voice of the community internally-providing feedback to product and support teams.
Coordinate giveaways, contests, AMAs, or community spotlights to celebrate and grow participation.
Help System76 show up at events (virtually or in person) as a community-first brand.
What You Bring
3+ years experience in community management, social media, or developer relations
Demonstrable experience managing social channels and forums
Expertise in current and emerging social media best practices, with a track record of adapting to changing algorithms and formats to drive high engagement
Excellent writing skills with a distinct, engaging voice
Comfortable with creative tools (Canva or similar) and basic video editing
Experience with social media tools like Buffer, Hootsuite, or Sprout
Analytical skills to track metrics and iterate on content performance
Empathy, humor, and the ability to maintain a positive tone-even during tough conversations
Bonus Points
Understanding of Linux culture, memes, and the open-source ethos
Familiarity with System76 products, Pop!_OS, or COSMIC DE
Basic knowledge of HTML, Markdown, or Git
Previous experience in a technical or developer-facing company
Experience moderating Discord or Matrix servers, Reddit communities, or forums
