Position Summary :
The LVT - Anesthesia is responsible for the administration and monitoring of anesthesia during surgical procedures, ensuring patient safety and comfort throughout the perioperative period. This role involves collaboration with the surgical, ICU, and sterile processing teams to provide high-quality anesthesia care, assist in surgical procedures, and support post-operative recovery. The LVT - Anesthesia also plays a crucial role in maintaining compliance with protocols and ensuring efficient patient flow.
Key Responsibilities :
Anesthesia Management
- Administer and monitor anesthesia for surgical patients, ensuring proper anesthetic depth and patient stability.
- Perform patient assessments, including pre-anesthetic evaluations and post-anesthetic monitoring.
- Utilize advanced anesthetic techniques, including epidurals, local, and regional nerve blocks.
- Maintain accurate anesthetic records and ensure compliance with all safety protocols.
- Troubleshoot anesthesia-related concerns and report to the attending surgeon or Surgery Services Manager (SSM) as needed.
Surgical Assistance & Patient Care
Assist in patient surgical preparation, including catheter placement, intubation, and IV fluid administration.Perform diagnostic tests and radiographs as needed.Monitor patients for potential complications and respond promptly to anesthetic emergencies.Maintain a sterile environment in the operating room and ensure proper instrument handling.Participate in surgical rounds to communicate patient status and address potential concerns.ICU & Post-Operative Recovery
Ensure timely completion of patient treatments and accurate charge capture within VetRadar.Provide detailed rounds and handoffs to oncoming shifts and surgeons.Administer post-operative pain management, including medication and therapeutic treatments such as cold compression, passive range of motion, and laser therapy.Assist in patient recovery, ensuring a smooth transition from anesthesia to wakefulness.Ensure post-op discharge preparations, including accurate documentation and completion of patient discharge checklists.Collaboration and Communication
Work closely with the surgical, ICU, and sterile processing teams to optimize workflow and patient care.Relay important patient updates to surgeons, surgical floor leads, and ICU leads.Address potential delays and communicate with relevant departments promptly.Assist in training new team members in anesthetic protocols and best practices.Participate in department meetings and provide feedback for process improvements.Inventory and Quality Management
Monitor and maintain anesthesia supplies and medications, updating the Want List as needed.Assist in maintaining and troubleshooting anesthesia equipment.Ensure compliance with regulatory standards and best practices in anesthesia care.Skills and Qualifications :
Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) with current licensure.Proficiency in anesthetic administration, monitoring, and troubleshooting.Strong understanding of surgical procedures, including orthopedic and soft tissue surgeries.Ability to multitask, prioritize responsibilities, and perform under pressure.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and organized.Knowledge of sterilization techniques and infection control protocols.Physical ability to stand for long periods and assist in patient handling.Work Environment : This role requires working in a fast-paced surgical setting, where adaptability and critical thinking are essential. The LVT - Anesthesia must maintain composure while managing multiple cases and supporting surgical teams.
Reporting Structure : The LVT - Anesthesia reports directly to the Surgery Services Manager and Surgical Floor Leads and works closely with the ICU, Inventory Manager, and Sterile Processing to ensure seamless patient care.
