Position Summary
The Vice President of Construction Operations is a key executive leader responsible for the overall performance, profitability, and execution of GMA’s construction projects. This individual will ensure operational excellence across project delivery, manage full P&L for construction operations, and lead field and project management teams. In addition, the Director will play a strategic role in driving business development initiatives to support GMA’s continued growth and operational scale across multiple markets.
Key Responsibilities :
Client & Stakeholder Leadership
- Serve as the executive liaison to key clients, ensuring satisfaction, trust, and repeat business.
- Lead relationship management efforts to secure future work and enhance the firm's reputation in the industry.
- Identify, pursue, and help close new business opportunities in collaboration with senior leadership and business development teams.
Business Development & Market Expansion
Actively participate in go / no-go decisions and proposal strategies for new pursuits.Support the identification of emerging markets, key accounts, and strategic partnerships to fuel company growth.Provide market intelligence and insights to shape GMA’s positioning in the construction industry, especially in affordable housing, healthcare, and education sectors.Subcontractor Strategy
Build and sustain high-performing partnerships with subcontractors and vendors.Oversee subcontractor prequalification, onboarding, and performance management to align with company goals and project needs.Project Oversight & Escalation Management
Serve as the escalation point for complex issues across all projects—addressing delays, staffing challenges, budget overruns, and client or subcontractor conflicts.Lead resolution efforts related to change orders, contractual modifications, and project disputes.Provide strategic oversight across multiple job sites, ensuring projects are executed safely, on time, within budget, and to the highest standards of quality.P&L and Operational Performance Management
Own the P&L for construction operations, ensuring profitability, cost control, and financial performance across all active and upcoming projects.Establish operational KPIs and manage performance metrics such as gross margin, backlog health, budget variance, and overhead efficiency.Lead forecasting, resource planning, and financial reporting for construction operations in partnership with finance and executive teams.Organizational Leadership & Strategy
Collaborate with the COO and executive team to shape the company’s strategic direction and operational goals.Lead the development and continuous improvement of SOPs, project delivery systems, and company-wide construction processes.Partner with HR to recruit, develop, and retain top-tier construction talent.Ensure legal, regulatory, and safety compliance across all field operations and job sites.Travel
Travel to project sites and regional offices as required (primarily Chicago, Dallas, and other strategic markets).Qualifications
20+ years of experience in construction management, with at least 10 years in a senior operational leadership role.Demonstrated success in P&L ownership and delivering operational profitability in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.Experience in business development, market positioning, and client acquisition strategies.Proven track record in managing complex commercial construction projects in sectors such as affordable housing , healthcare , or education .Expertise in scheduling, project controls, risk management, contract negotiation, and team leadership.Strong interpersonal, communication, and executive presence.Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management , Engineering , Architecture , or a related field; advanced degree or certifications (e.g., PMP , CCM , LEED ) preferred.Compensation & Benefits
