Group Leader For Magnetic Devices Group
The Accelerator Systems Division (ASD) provides best-in-class operation, maintenance and upgrade of the Advanced Photon Source accelerators and support users in doing outstanding science in a safe environment. The division is searching for a Group Leader to provide the necessary supervision and technical leadership for the Magnetic Devices Group of the Accelerator Systems Division at the Advanced Photon Source.
This person in this position will :
- Manage all aspects of the necessary research, design, analysis, construction, improvement, installation, operation and maintenance of APS insertion devices, including permanent magnet and superconducting undulators.
- Manage all aspects of the design, construction and improvement of all APS accelerator complex electromagnets.
- Manage the budgeting and scheduling of the groups R&D and maintenance activities.
- Lead the development of innovative magnetic systems to enhance the performance and reliability of the APS.
- Work with ASD management to improve effectiveness and efficiency of the group for benefit of the APS.
- Collaborate with other working groups, divisions, and organizations including internal Argonne organizations, external laboratories and private companies. These may be stakeholder, collaborator or contractor relationships.
- May be required to perform other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements :
Knowledge and direct experience, as demonstrated by a track record of significant accomplishments, in the development and operations of insertion devices at the large user facility.Knowledge and expertise must be demonstrated in basics of accelerator theory, including effects of the integration of insertion devices in the storage ring.Knowledge and expertise must be demonstrated in undulator radiation theory.Knowledge of safety programs and safety-related practices related to permanent and electrically-powered magnetic systems.Skill in preparing and presenting technical articles and publications suitable for inclusion in peer-reviewed technical journals.Experience successfully leading technical groups and managing operations within the DOE complex or National Laboratories or in a similarly large and complex organization in support of science and technology, particularly synchrotron facilities or accelerator installations.Knowledge of DOE and Laboratory policies including ES&H policies and practices is preferred.Skill and experience in the development of technical programs, and in resource as well as technical management of physicists and programmers in the development of procedures and software tools for effective, heavily-automated accelerator operation, study, and optimization. Skills are required in the areas of judgment, foresight, resource management and leadership.Results-oriented, with a distinguished record of accomplishments with performance characterized by integrity and the highest ethical standards.Interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills, and ability to interact with people at all levels both within and outside the laboratory.Ability to model Argonne's core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.Job Family : Research Development (RD)

The expected hiring range for this position is $157,940.00 - $256,639.50. Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as, but not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, business considerations, internal equity, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
