At the Calgary Drop-In and Rehab Centre (the DI), we are dedicated to serving our community with kindness. All of our programs, including emergency shelter, are low-barrier, trauma-informed, housing-focused, and recovery-oriented, aimed at supporting Calgary's most vulnerable citizens. And our doors are always open.

Position Summary

We are hiring a Health & Safety Advisor who can help us maintain a safe, responsive, and trauma-informed workplace for both staff and the people we serve. This role supports all aspects of physical and psychological health and safety, with a focus on real-time problem-solving in a fast-paced and often unpredictable environment.

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Health, Safety & Environment, the Health & Safety Advisor is responsible for working as part of a team responsible for the administration, implementation, and stewardship of the HSE program for the agency and continuing to maintain professional, wellness-focused relationships both internally and externally.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Actively support the administration, implementation, and continuous improvement of the DI's Health, Safety, and Wellness program
  • Respond to and investigate reported health & safety incidents and concerns, ensuring thorough documentation, follow-up, and corrective actions are completed
  • Design and complete regular reporting to operations teams on incident trends and identify areas of focus and recommended solutions
  • Conduct hazard assessments, safety inspections, and participate in internal audits across multiple buildings
  • Assist with training and coaching of teams or individuals, both within the HSE team and outside of the team (including employees, volunteers, contractors, etc.)
  • Support emergency response readiness, including fire drills, evacuation planning, and staff training
  • Ensure the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) of all controlled products on site is always up-to-date and accessible to all employees
  • Work with other key stakeholders within and outside the HSE department to ensure understanding of HSE legislation, safety considerations, as well as audit readiness
  • Coordinate and manage Toolbox / Tailgate meetings, and Health & Safety Committee meetings
  • Create and maintain procedural documentation and updates
  • Perform research, make recommendations, and use creative forms of communication to best equip others in our environment
  • Monitor legislative changes and support compliance across programs and buildings
  • Participate in on-call rotation for after-hours support

What We Are Looking For

We recognize that the right candidate may come from different sectors. We welcome applicants from both nonprofit / social services and regulated or technical safety environments. A combination of relevant education, certification, and field experience will be considered.

Required Competencies and Qualifications

  • Minimum three years of progressive experience in occupational health & safety, emergency management, or operations in high-risk environments
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to educate and influence across levels
  • Proven experience responding to incidents or managing safety risks in various environments, with preference to shelter, health care, and / or residential environments
  • Strong knowledge of investigation techniques, ability to determine root causes, and propose corrective actions
  • Comfort working with diverse populations, including individuals facing homelessness, trauma, or complex challenges
  • Strong understanding of Alberta OHS legislation, WCB reporting, and corrective action planning
  • Proficient in Office365
  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to improve processes
  • Must demonstrate initiative and ability to work autonomously
  • Eager to learn new systems and adopt improved best practices
  • A genuine commitment to the mission, vision, values, and work of the agency
  • Assets

  • Experience in a nonprofit, shelter, or healthcare setting
  • Training in psychological health and safety, Mental Health First Aid, and / or trauma-informed care
  • Knowledge of the COR program or similar auditing frameworks
  • HS Administration, NCSO, or safety designation in progress
  • Working Conditions

    The individuals we serve are experiencing homelessness or precarious housing and may also be facing substance use disorders and / or mental or physical health challenges. Many have a history of significant trauma. These experiences can influence their interactions with both staff and one another. By recognizing these behaviors as responses to past experiences, we are able to engage with our guests in a manner that is empathetic and respectful.

    This role may involve high-stress situations that require resilience, compassion, and composure. At the DI we are deeply committed to the well-being of our staff, implementing policies and providing resources that support both physical and psychological safety, as well as mental health.
