We are seeking a full-time Communications Officer to join our Public Safety team on 2nd shift. As a Communications (dispatch) Officer, you'll play a key role in ensuring the MSOE campus remains a safe and secure environment for students, staff, and faculty. Essential functions will be to receive and handle both emergency and non-emergency calls from the MSOE community and the public for assistance and dispatch appropriate emergency or non-emergency services to necessary locations while maintaining strong communication with the Public Safety team and your MSOE community. - Off days Tuesdays and Wednesdays
- Ability to work overtime and holidays as assigned

Receive non-emergency calls from the MSOE community and the public for assistanceReceive emergency calls from the MSOE community and the public requesting police, fire, medical or other emergency servicesDetermine the nature and location of the emergency, determine priorities, and dispatch Public Safety Patrol Officers or other emergency personnel as necessary in accordance with established proceduresMaintain contact with all Public Safety personnel on assignmentsMaintain status and location of all Public Safety personnel on dutyReceive requests for information regarding vehicle registration and provide pertinent dataMonitor Public Safety radio frequenciesOperate a variety of communications equipment, including radio consoles, telephones, and computer systemsMonitor direct emergency alarms and dispatch Public Safety Patrol Officers or other emergency personnel as necessary in accordance with established proceduresMonitor the Public Safety video surveillance system and dispatch Public Safety Patrol Officers in accordance with established proceduresRecord the names of all guests visiting MSOE students and collect their identificationDistribute department keys to members of the MSOE communityAvailability to work evenings, weekends, holidays and overtimeOther Duties and Responsibilities
Inventory lost and found property turned into the Public Safety DepartmentAssist the Lead Communications Officer with updating the Public Safety Standard Operating ProceduresDispatch SHIP calls for service when a student employee isn't availableProvide breaks for Public Safety Residence Hall Officers during their assigned shiftAssist Public Safety Patrol Officers with checking panic alarms, hold-up alarms, and emergency phonesAssist with Evacuation DrillsThis list of duties and responsibilities is not all-inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities as management may deem necessary from time to time.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalentPrevious Public Safety dispatching experience preferred but we will consider all hard-working, motivated individuals with Customer Service or Call Center experienceSkills and Abilities
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before others. Ability to effectively communicate in both written and oral form.Ability to use numbers to solve problems involving concrete variables in standardized situations.Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written or oral instructions.Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job the employee is largely sedentary, the ability to move is required. The employee is occasionally required to traverse within their work area as well as other areas on campus.The employee must also have the ability to handle several tasks simultaneously.Work Environment
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role uses standard office equipment, including but not limited to computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets.
