Director of Agronomy
The Director is responsible for the development and management of two golf courses and all related facilities. The responsibilities are to supervise the construction and maintenance of the golf courses, to supervise the servicing and repair of turf grass maintenance and construction equipment, to keep appropriate records, and to prepare budgets and reports. Responsible for the direction and supervision of the day-to-day activities of all Golf Course Maintenance staff.
Essential Functions
- Responsible for the direction and supervision of the day-to-day activities of the GCM employees, including their selection, appointment, salary, placement, promotion, separation and disciplinary action, in cooperation with the Human Resources Director.
- Plans, organizes, and directs the construction of putting greens, tees, fairways, roughs and bunkers.
- Supervises the maintenance of putting greens, tees, fairways, roughs, bunkers and related areas.
- Supervises the planting and cultural practices involved in growing various turf grasses, trees, and ornamental plants.
- Supervises the efficient operation of an equipment service and repair shop.
- Procures supplies and materials within budgetary limitations.
- Keeps records of annual maintenance activities and costs.
- Prepares and presents the annual golf course maintenance budget.
- Responsible for and manages interviewing, hiring and discharge of employees.
- Keep GM / COO advised of problems or poor member response related to Golf Course operations.
- Must be available and schedule their regular hours of management to conform with Golf Course operations and services.
- Extend extreme courtesy to all Quail Ridge Country Club members.
- Works closely with Community General Manager, CFO, Director of Operations, Director of Golf, Controller, and Human Resource Director.
- Continuously seeks improvements within the courses in an effort to provide the highest level of service possible.
- Oversees, protects, maintains, renovates or replaces physical assets in Golf Course Maintenance area within approved budgets.
- Ensures that the courses are operated in accordance with all applicable local, state and federal laws.
- Attend Committee and Board meetings as Quail Ridge Director.
- Performs position with high standards, integrity and in a timely and efficient manner.
- Hires and directs subordinate supervisors / employees and gives input on hiring of other golf course employees.
- Thoroughly evaluates all personnel who report directly to the Department Head on an annual basis. Ensures that all employees in the Department receive an annual evaluation.
- Recommends wage and bonus payments for Department employees to the General Manager / COO.
- Is current on all HR policies and ensures new information and policies are communicated at all levels.
- Works with the Human Resources Department concerning all employees discipline, evaluations, onboarding, interviewing, terminations, safety training / training, and other related personnel concerns and procedures.
- Provides input and cooperates with the General Manager and CFO in preparation of the annual operating and capital budgets.
- Monitors monthly and other financial statements for the Department and takes effective corrective action as required.
- Reviews income and costs relative to goals; takes corrective action as necessary in close association with the General Manager and CFO.
- Ensures compliance with purchasing and inventory policies within the Department.
- Maintains membership with relevant professional associations. Attends conferences, workshops and meetings to keep abreast of current information and developments in the field, as approved by the General Manager.
- Participates in outside activities that are approved by the General Manager to enhance the prestige of the community and fulfill the public obligations of Quail Ridge.
- Perform any other duties and / or tasks that may be assigned by management.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Must have knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures in Golf Course Maintenance / Turf Maintenance.Knowledge of the use of turf and landscaping equipment including tractors, mowers, aerifier, electric motors, etc...Must have excellent computer skills, including extensive use of Microsoft Office programs.Must have knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures on a golf course country club community.Efficiently handle multiple calls to customers, members, vendors and the general public.Respond to member complaints and inquiries in a courteous and friendly manner.Must possess excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills.Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.Must possess excellent organizational skills and coordinate and complete tasks with limited supervision.Must be a detail-oriented individual and possess time management skills.Must maintain high performance standards.Simple computational skills (Add, Subtract, Multiply, Divide, Percents)Fluent reading and writing in English with the ability to recognize signs and symbols.Ability to deal with routine changes often.Must be able to recognize and solve problems.Ability to deal effectively and tactfully with all employees, management and members.Ability to work in a fast paced environment.Education and Experience
Bachelor's Degree required in turf grass management / golf course management / agronomy / horticultural / plant / soil science or related field and / or equivalent experience.Ten years general golf course maintenance superintendent experience.Requires knowledge of irrigation and current chemical practices.Required experience with budgeting, inventory and cost control, vendor relations and negotiations.Required experience with staff training, team building, and development.Must have Florida State Pesticide License.Requires extensive knowledge of all turf equipment.Must have excellent computer skills, including use of Microsoft Office programs.Thorough knowledge of Club standard operating policies and procedures.Continuing education classes related to golf course maintenance.Must have thorough understanding of golf course.Minimum of five years' experience required in supervising and managing staff.Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervises 35 GCM hourly staff and 5 salaried individuals Superintendents, Assistant Superintendents, Light Equipment Operators, Heavy Equipment Operators, Spray Technicians, Irrigation Technicians, Mechanic Equipment Manager, Mechanics, GCM Interns, Administrative Assistant and any outsourced staff.We participate in E-Verify Equal Employment Employer Drug Free Workplace
