Veterinarian

The Animal Rescue League of Iowa currently has openings for full-time, part-time, and relief veterinarians with opportunities to work both in the shelter and clinic setting. Your Mission : As a Veterinarian at the ARL, you will advance our mission by providing high-quality medical care to animals under the care of the ARL. You will ensure that each animal receives compassionate treatment, expert wellness care, and appropriate interventions, supporting their health, recovery, and adoption readiness. What You'll Do : In this role, you will conduct medical examinations, monitor animal health, and provide necessary treatments and surgical procedures, including spay / neuter surgeries. You will advise on nutrition, preventative care, and general pet health, and provide support at community outreach clinics as needed. You will maintain accurate medical records, collaborate with staff and volunteers on animal care, and recommend improvements to medical processes and procedures. You will manage medical emergencies, administer medications, and provide guidance on euthanasia when appropriate. Throughout your work, you will model compassionate handling of animals, follow all safety protocols, adhere to state regulations, and ensure that ARL policies and procedures are upheld. What You Bring : You have a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree and a valid license to practice veterinary medicine in Iowa. You either hold or are eligible to obtain a DEA license. You bring excellent problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skills, and you are able to work in a fast-paced, high-stress environment. A valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record is required. You are comfortable using Microsoft Office and performing basic mathematical calculations. Working Conditions : This role requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and spend long periods standing or sitting. Work may expose you to odors, animal waste, diseases that are potentially contagious, moderate noise, bites, or scratches. You must be able to function effectively in environments where animals may be fearful, ill, or recovering from trauma, and adhere closely to safety and disease control protocols. Why Work at the ARL?
